A faithful and exciting representation of classic animation

Beauty and the Beast (Beauty and the Beast,) was one of the animations that most marked an entire generation. Standing out for showing beyond the well-known princesses and their beautiful princes, the drawing shows a strong protagonist, independent and very far from the futile feminine stereotypes, with a romantic couple that goes far beyond the conventional, focusing on showing the importance of seeing the inner beauty of people.

The Disney decided to relive this interesting tale in the live-action version, and to ensure success it invested in making it as faithful as possible in relation to the original design and bringing a strong cast, commanded by the darling Emma Watson. The plot, like the original, brings Lovely (Watson), a cultured and independent girl who takes care of her father Maurice (Kevin Kline) and wants a different life from the girls in his village. When your father is taken prisoner by a hideous Beast (Dan Stevens), the girl offers to take her father's place and ends up getting to know this beast and his castle full of animated objects better.

The film was faithful in the exact measure that the trailers show. Very little was cut, but in order not to be just the identical version of the live-action drawing, the production added additions, like explaining what happened to Bela's mother and justifying the prince's behavior before becoming the Beast, who it looks like it was created.

The work is noticeably more adult, it will please all ages, but, perhaps to ensure that the viewer captures all the moral issues that are pointed out in Beauty and the Beast, is more explicit and seems to make a point of highlighting all social criticisms, since we probably didn't notice them all in our childhood innocence when watching the drawing. Gaston (Luke Evans) is the one who makes this subtle change more evident, even though he has the same attitudes as the character in the drawing, he seems much more cruel and vulgar in this version. This is reinforced by small differences, such as Bela's father not being crazy at first, but still suffering the threat of being hospitalized in a hospice by the village population, at the behest of Gastão, this only makes it more evident how much he manipulated the people with his charm and is, in reality, the true monster of history.

The strong cast delivers, without exception, an incredible performance, even made by the objects of the castle, which only with their voice and similarities in the effects of creating the characters, are able to make it clear who they are. The Beast, which has a look based on the strokes of Dan Stevens, was impressive, very reminiscent of the actor throughout the production. There was no doubt about Emma Watson's acting, as the role fits her like a glove, but I think it is worth mentioning that she perfectly delivers her part, both acting and singing.

Luke Evans also deserves an honorable mention, as he managed to get all of Gaston's arrogance to the screen without any difficulty. However, who deserves the real highlight is Josh Glad, who plays his faithful partner LeFou. Glad gave the character a unique air, while remaining incredibly loyal to the little man in the cartoon, he was very important with the subtle changes of his character. The film's LeFou delivers different values - in addition to the controversy of homosexuality - that show that Glad is not only good in an empty comic role, but also in completely changing his posture, which he shows only in expressions.

The visuals, as well as the soundtrack, are perfect. From the beginning, they are impressed by the similarity, especially the exterior shots of the village and castle, which could deceive and pass for the animation scenes. The beautiful scenery and the soundtrack with scenes identical to the originals provide a pleasant journey through time that will undoubtedly thrill fans of this Disney classic.

It's impressive, and a little depressing, as Beauty and the Beast it is still current. Raising issues such as prejudice against Bela, who is considered strange because she is an independent woman and goes beyond the feminine futilities of other girls, in addition to pointing out how society is easily manipulated by the “heartthrob”, the work still manages to convey the message of that what really matters is the inner beauty.

Beauty and the Beast opens on March 16 in Brazilian cinemas.
