BMW Group in Araquari celebrates 7 years being an example of sustainability

Targets for lower consumption of resources and recycling are bold

the factory of BMW Group in Araquari reaches its seven years of age not only focused on producing premium vehicles with the recognized quality of the BMW Group – among them the best-selling model in the segment on Brazilian soil this year, the BMW 3 Series – but also with even bolder sustainability goals and practical actions.

The plant has a total area of 1.5 million square meters, with 112,893 square meters of built area. The local infrastructure houses bodywork, welding, painting, assembly and logistics processes, as well as laboratories, administrative and auxiliary buildings.

The models are manufactured in Araquari. BMW 3 Series, X1, X3 and X4 for the Brazilian market. Emblematic for being the biggest production car since the beginning of the factory, the BMW X1 had more than 35,000 units produced on site. Not by chance, it was chosen to be the 70,000th BMW made at the plant, a milestone celebrated in June. All four are manufactured following the strictest sustainability parameters. Over its seven-year history, more than 70,000 units have been manufactured at the BMW Group's facility in Santa Catarina.

“One of my challenges as the new plant director is that our plant continues to be an example of sustainability actions for the BMW Group around the world. I'm sure our team takes on this challenge and is inspired by its results to continue to stand out more and more in this social responsibility", reveals Otávio Rodacoswiski.

Among the sustainability actions put into practice by the plant is the expansion of the number of photovoltaic panels on the roof of the assembly building. From 562 to 1,372 slabs, with the addition of 810 slabs to those already installed in 2020. The annual energy generation with the slabs increases to 788MWh and the contribution to the CO2 emission reduction target reaches 20%. It is worth remembering that Araquari production is already neutral in terms of CO2 emissions. This is possible through the offsetting of emissions signed with the Morrinhos wind farm, in Bahia.

Sustainability combined with the corporate responsibility of its products also guide the initiatives in Araquari. The team, in partnership with the Center for Strategic Research in Solar Energy gives Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), O Solvi Group and the Energy Source, developed a charging concept for electric cars powered by solar energy, free from the public energy network and which gives second life to high voltage batteries. This initiative is a pioneer and encourages the reuse of high voltage batteries to optimize the expansion of sustainable electric mobility. Studies are being carried out to optimize the proposal, together with companies and institutes that are partners in the project.

In addition to new projects, the factory follows the goal of reducing, annually, the numbers of use of natural resources. In one year, the unit continued to seek to reduce its environmental impact and managed to reduce energy consumption by more than 3000 MWh, water consumption by more than 1.9 million liters and the amount of waste for disposal by more than 6 tons. From 2016 to 2020, these numbers are even more remarkable. Energy consumption was reduced by less 33%, water by less 41% and waste for disposal by less 87%.

Among the actions to achieve these results are two projects created by employees and partners such as the Upcycle Element – which reuses and donates textile residues from production such as electrical harness bags and used uniforms to groups of women who sew and sell these products. It's the seal the deal, which transfers sealant residues to partner companies to be used in the production of rugs, doormats and carpets. Both winners of 22nd edition of the Fritz Müller Award, of Institute of the Environment of Santa Catarina, in the categories Social and Environmental Management and Recycling, respectively.

Global Corporate Sustainability Strategy

The BMW Group is pursuing its Global Corporate Sustainability Strategy around the world. It focuses environmental protection activities not only on products, where it is a global leader in the sale of premium electrified vehicles, but also on emissions from its production chain. By 2030, the company will reduce CO2 emissions per vehicle by 80% in production, 40% in use and 20% in suppliers, when compared to 2019.
