Review: Carrie

Carrie was a character created so well by Stephen King that always seems to come back. The first cinematographic version based on the author's eponymous book was very successful - even if it was not exactly faithful to the work - but with the excellent direction of Brian De Palma and the incredible performance of Sissy Spacek, the feature had the desired effect.

In this new version of Carrie (Carrie), the proposed Kimberly Peirce it seemed different from the start, with an actress known to the youth audience and a slightly more updated plot, it was visible that there would be some changes to justify a re-recording of a successful film and the biggest bet was terror, since it would be logical to abuse the current features in heavier scenes.

But that was not what happened. The plot ended up being much more youthful than the old one and it didn't come close to having the same effect as the previous feature. At first the script seemed to want to fix the differences in relation to the adaptation, delivering very faithful scenes that impressed for a while, however, as it gets close to the end, everything goes off and everything that possibly displeased the fans of the book in the first film is repeated and with entitled to many added absurdities.

The plot tells the story of the Girl Carietta White (Chloë Grace Moretz), who has the gift of telekinesis and bullying at school because of the craziness in his upbringing, derived from his mother Margaret White (Julianne Moore), in addition to the abuses suffered by it. One day, when the young woman menstruates for the first time, she despairs and believes she is dying, for never having talked about the topic at home. Once again, she is ridiculed by the high school girls. Gradually, she develops these powers until fatally causing a disaster.

The work is an interesting horror, but it weighs on the side of irrelevance. There is no apparent defect, the plot (if you ignore the book) is coherent, the effects are well placed and the direction is satisfactory, but it is a long “forgettable”, which does not manage to be remarkable in a time when terror is dominating the screens and it becomes just one more.

The cast is equally convincing, Chloë is not surprising in acting, but she manages to deliver her role and chemistry well and Julianne Moore is wonderful. Their roles are quite contrasting, which works well, while Moretz goes from nothing to an exaggeration of power, Moore is delicate but abusive throughout the process.

Carrie turns out to be a very mild terror. Predictable, for being a known story, and free of any suspense or tension. It is a very basic entertainment that will not displease, but it will hardly be anything other than a hobby.
