The newly released Brazilian version of blind marriage, reality show available on Netflix, has raised numerous debates. Can "happily ever after" really be the result of a simple passion provoked by conversations that take place behind walls without eye contact? More than that, “Marriage à Cegas” reveals that women today are not like they used to be. Now the men…

Deborah De Mari, one of the 100 most influential people in gender research in the world and founder of strength girls, an educational platform that develops in girls the skills they need to take on the opportunities of the 21st century, raises five gender stereotypes broken in the program. “Marriage à Cegas Brasil, which promises to put the myth of romantic love in check, draws much more attention to the unexpected or desperate behavior of men and women in search of great love. That's where we see the clichés of gender dissipate”, says the researcher.

Déborah, who is also creator of the Change the World as a Girl award, which takes place on 10/23 and highlights girls aged 13 to 21 and their projects to change the world and helps them with training and mentoring to go even further , writes in his analysis that if the gender was blind, the attitudes allowed most of the participants to switch roles.

Get to know the 5 aspects that caught the attention of the girl women's rights activist.

(This text contains spoilers from the first 5 episodes).

Women are romantic, men are logical

Tall, dark and friendly, the Iranian Shayan Haghbinghomi immediately draws the participants' attention with his gringo accent. Despite persistent questions, he hides the game about his nationality until the second meeting.

Easy to talk to, he immediately connects with model and solo mother Ana Prado. In the conversation between the two, he highlights the importance of respect; she speaks out right away that a relationship with her has to include her daughter. Shayan returns from the meeting excited, and when he finds himself in the company of the other boys, he says loudly that he has already found his chosen one and that the affinities and connection were immediate. Ana describes him as the most interesting person who talked.

in the game of reason versus In addition to emotion, the women on the show clearly seek to rationalize affinities, while the men are mostly guided by appearances. By their own account, they seem disoriented without an adequate emotional compass to react to the game, or embarrassed, pretending to appear.

This dynamic is repeated in other meetings, such as Ana Terra and Mack (dismissed), Dayane Feitosa and Rodrigo Vaisemberg.

Women compete with each other and men are friends

Adventure and the unexpected, or the security of tranquil love? This was the dilemma faced by Ana Terra when she felt confused between the handsome Thiago and Mack. Mack, the architect who sells dreams, from the first meeting put the beauty artist at the top of her list, opponent Thiago said that she was in his 4th place until he heard Mack's words. In the episodes that followed, a straight chat between Mack and Thiago reveals that Thiago's flirtatious and dubious personality, and Mack's tense one. The facts that follow show two grown men in successive encounters with the chosen one, trying to sell their attributes and demonstrating why they should be the chosen ones.

A very similar situation happened among women. Lissio Fiod from Maranhão and Luana and Carolina from Bahia staged a very similar situation, but unlike the dispute between the young men in the previous case, we saw two strong women with their feet on the ground, talking on equal terms.

Finally, since Lissio didn't decide, Carolina took the lead and gave the boy a break, understanding that this was not the kind of relationship he was looking for. Right her!

Women seek marriage as a form of social ascension

After a few meetings, the affinities between Day and Rodrigo participants, a big difference jumps to the eyes of us, viewers: the social difference. Rodrigo, who introduces himself as a businessman, of Jewish origin, says he comes from a family of female artists, his grandmother is a painter, his aunts and mother draw very well. The fact draws the attention of banker Day, who directly argues.

“I feel like we have a lot of differences. I come from a much more humble family, I am the first person in my mother's family to graduate”, says Day, which complements "If you meet my family I will take you to a barbecue on the roof."

He immediately says that it won't be a problem, that they will take it well. In other words, at no time does Day take a position in the sense of having entered the relationship to rise socially.

Hot women aren't dumb. On the contrary.

The bank clerk Dayane, at first sight, impresses with her shapes and her cleavage, but in a very short time her good humor and lightness in dealing with important topics for a healthy relationship are impressive. In a few meetings with the mushy but fun Rodrigo, Dayane talks lightly but directly about jealousy, work, social differences and even sex. Dayane shows that the myth of the dumb hottie is just another fallacy that puts women in boxes with the aim of discouraging them from being who they are.

Women are fragile and insecure, men are strong

At the first dinner, Carol and Hudson experienced a situation that yielded many conversations with the other participants and exposed the machismo of our everyday lives in the boys who so far seemed cool.

At the time, Carol asked the waiter why the wine tasting was only offered to her partner and not to her. “Why just the man first?” she asked. Then he argued that serving the woman at the tasting was also a matter of breaking taboos.

Hudson was quite upset with Carol's posture. The feminist and racial activist reinforced that the partner needed a deconstruction. He, at first, was willing and put his vulnerability into play with the phrase: "The way Cá deals with feminism scares me! It bothers me the way she does itEverything we said about the role of a man, I can be the example of a man, you know? But I'm afraid of not meeting what she expects, but I'm rebuilding myself."

At the collective dinner, Carol returned to the topic and the face of general embarrassment was evident. Meanwhile, the women continued talking about the challenges of the present and the future; the men, or the boys, seemed terribly frightened by the attitude of an independent and speaking-as-you-think woman like Carol. The low point is for participant Thiago Dutra, who speaks worthy of a period serial: “I don't accept being embarrassed in public, dirty laundry is washed at home"

What the next episodes of Blind Marriage have in store for us we will know over the days, but one thing is already known: the reality show is there to show that this generation of young women knows very well what they want, and as Carol told Hudson , but that fits all men": “Don't feel pressured because I'm an independent woman. Be aware that if she chose you it is because she knows you are open to conversation.”
