Matthew McConaughey is an actor who has proven his way through Hollywood. Starting in weak, usually empty films, his role was constantly limited to showing his physique. Lately this view of the actor has been changing drastically, with his recent role change, moving to more serious and meaningful works such as Killer Joe - Killer for Hire, Obsession, True Detective and even their participation in the wolf of Wall Street, Matthew has been showing his talent and physical change in Dallas Shopping Club it was the coup de grace to prove to the world what it is capable of.

Dallas Shopping Club (Dallas Buyers Club) tells the real story of Ron Woodroof (McConaughey), a Texan without much ambition in his life who contracted the HIV virus in the 1980s, where the disease was still synonymous with homosexuality. Ron was a guy who didn't care much about life, worked as an electrician and was only interested in having sex with as many women as possible, which included a fair share of prostitutes. When he was diagnosed, doctors gave him 30 days to live, but his biggest concern was being considered homosexual because of the disease.

At the beginning of this AIDS epidemic, the FDA, a US government agency that releases and tests new drugs, has started testing the experimental drug AZT. What was initially a hope for those who carried the disease, turned out to be a complicating factor in a few months, since the drug destroyed all the cells in the body and not just the “sick” cells.

In desperation to save his life, Ron quickly realizes that AZT is not helping and ends up resorting to an illegal drug in the US, but that it gives good results. After that, with the help of your, at the moment, known Rayon (Jared Leto), begins to export the drug and from there comes the Shopping Club, which finally, almost halfway through the film, explains why the title.

The plot explores the AIDS controversy in depth, showing important issues, but ends up falling into a certain repetition and fails to explore equally important issues, such as the dark side of the pharmaceutical industry, which aims only at profits. The script is interesting and satisfying, but leaves the feeling that it could be a little more.

The performances are undoubtedly the highlight of the feature. In order to perfectly represent the physical transformation of HIV victims, the actors underwent drastic and shocking changes in their bodies. McConaughey came to be under 60 kgs to take on this complicated protagonist, but it was not only he who embraced this cause, the whole cast was terribly thin, especially Jared Leto, who got nervous when he appeared on the screen without the women's garments.

Sim, é o Jared Leto!
Jared Leto's incredible transformation

The duo goes beyond transformation, gives a show in acting. Matthew embodies a weakened, weakened countryman, so convincing that he justifies all the indications and awards that won so far. Leto plays an even more complex character, a drug addicted transvestite, HIV positive, who steals the show. And it's Jared's character who shows the other side of the story. In addition to the beauty of a simple guy, who was forced to research his illness, fight for the right of other victims to take the medicine that actually helps, we have Ron's relationship with Rayon. Ron, who started out being a prejudiced handsome, ends up creating a strong friendship with a transvestite.

The director Jean-Marc Vallée it also deserves a certain merit for these wonderful performances. Without the perfectly planned scenes to get the best out of the actors, without any sensational exaggeration (for example, at no time did Matthew's thinness be overexploited with several exhibitionist scenes to force the drama of the film), all the most dramatic scenes were set in the right time to set the mood. The sick environment was also very well explored, giving an almost claustrophobic feeling to the viewer.

Dallas Shopping Club it has many attractions, an interesting plot, a rich history and wonderful performances that compensate for some problems in the script.
