Based on the eponymous book by Lauren Oliver, Before I Go hits theaters on May 18. The adaptation does not change much, most are cuts, but unfortunately these details removed end up taking much of the essence of the original work, greatly simplifying the script.

See our list of differences between the film and the book and understand it better:

*** Be careful, it may contain spoilers ***

1. As vida não prejudicadas

Before I Go it follows the rule of chaos theory, which holds that a small change at the beginning of any event can have enormous consequences. With that in mind, the author takes the opportunity to leave several small routine issues in the life of the school that change as Sam comes back and fixes something.

Before the accident, Sam narrates the common day and early on they make a colleague arrive late for taking her place. Consequently, she is suspended for extrapolating the permitted number of delays and expelled from the team. There is also a girl who is betrayed by her boyfriend and through Sam's indirect fault, she finds out.

These details were completely removed from the film, only Juliet's questions and Rob and Sam's relationship remained.

Does this cut make a difference? Not much, but it takes away the richness of details and greatly simplifies the plot, leaving aside several interesting subjects that would differentiate the feature.

2. Professor politicamente correto

In the book, Damien, the beautiful math teacher and Samantha are always flirting. In one of the times that he relives the day, Sam decides to throw everything in the air and in fact hits the sexy teacher right in the middle of the class, in front of everyone. In response, at the end of class, she grabs it and when she says they need to stop it, promptly asks to keep it a secret.

In the feature, both the flirtation and the making out are removed, there is the scene where she teases him, but he dismisses her.

Does this cut make a difference? Not in relation to the path to the outcome, but in relation to the small messages that the author leaves in the book, and a lot. This part of the teacher was one of the most interesting in the work, because Samantha, who barely resisted his smile, begins to feel disgusted by the teacher who kisses a student and completely changes her view of him. It is an important message for young women, after all, who has never had a crush on the hot teacher? But the reminder remains that this is very wrong!

3. Kent simplificado

The relationship between Sam and Kent is very simplified in the feature. While in the book they tell painful truths on the first night, she avoids him on the second and on the next one cries beside him and only on the night when he witnesses the accident sleeps at his house, the film removes the fight and joins the crying with the day in that she sleeps there.

Speaking of Kent, the note he sends with the rose has also been modified, instead of the drawing, he writes a sentence that refers to the red skin that the character mentions being a reason for mockery in the book.

Does these cuts make a difference? Just the fight, as Kent's words were the trigger for Samantha to realize that she was not a good person and to try to change

4. Drama Extra

Lindsay and Juliet | Image: Paris Movies

In the work of Lauren Oliver, Juliet she was already decided when she went to the party, arriving just to tell the group some truths and then being attacked and sealing her destiny. Already in the feature, she only intended to have fun, but when she arrives she is attacked by Lindsay in the same instant.

Speaking of Juliet, his younger sister was cut from the film, besides, Sam doesn't go to his house, the explanation of Juliet's passion for art is replaced by a part showing the girl painting at school.

It is worth mentioning that, making perfect sense, they cut the first time Samantha thinks she will be able to save the girl but fails.

Does this change matter? A little. It is clear in the first scene that this change was made to give an extra justification for Juliet's attitudes, but it gets in the way when it comes time to show that she was already mindful even before the fight.

5. A Sam não-detetive -nem ladra- nem virgem

Unlike the book, where Samantha discovers the friendship between Lindsay and Juliet when looking for a secret in her things, in the film the friends only count.

On the bright side, she doesn't have that moment bad girl, the time he fights with his friends, all the time he goes out with Tara, stealing her mother's card and making expensive purchases, is cut and already shows the girl at the party. However, she does have sex with Rob at this party, unlike the book where she ends up staying a virgin.

Does this cut make a difference? No, in reality, it makes sense to cut.

6. Mais diversidade

Liv Hewson plays Anna in Before I Go

Remember the betrayal they cut? Well then, Anna was the girl who liked to be with someone else's boyfriend, but as there was no reason to be frowned upon at school, they exchanged it for prejudice against their sexual option. Yes, Anna is gay and Lindsay does not write "bitch" in the bathrooms, but "well-macho".

7. E lá vamos nós de novo…

In the film, even with all the cuts that end up showing less days than Sam relives, she ends up coming back more often. Through montages, we see that she returned many, many times, without knowing exactly how many, but they are more than the original seven.

Does this change matter? No, but there was something harmonious about her coming back for exactly a week.
