Last Thursday night (07/14), the Brazilian Association of Author-Screenwriters – Abra announced the winners of 6th edition of the Open Screenplay Award, sponsored by the Paradiso Project, a philanthropic institution to support audiovisual talents.  

Featuring the comedian Black Bill, the great honoree of the sixth edition was the director, screenwriter, and executive producer Joel Zito Araújo. In his first fiction film (“Filhas do Vento”), which he signed for direction and script, he received eight Kikitos at the 32nd Gramado Festival. “Meu Amigo Fela” was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Festival It's All True and received the Paul Robeson Award for Best Film Made in the African Diaspora at Fespaco de Burkina Faso, the largest African film festival. Recently, the director released in theaters “O pai da Rita”, a film with Ailton Graça and Wilson Rabello in theaters, a co-production of Casa de Criação Cinema and Globo Filmes and premiered with the series “PCC: Poder Secreto”, which was among the series most viewed on HBO Max.   

In the Best Original Screenplay for a Fiction Film category, the feature “The Same Part of a Man”, with a screenplay by Ana Johann and Alana Rodrigues, was awarded. 

 “My name is Bagdá”, with a screenplay by Caru Alves de Souza and Josefina Trotta, took the category for Best Adapted Screenplay from a Fiction Film.  

The award-winning “The Last Forest”, with a screenplay by Davi Kopenawa Yanomami and Luiz Bolognesi, won the award for Best Documentary Screenplay.  

The prize Paulo Gustavo Best Comedy Script was conceived by “Cabras da Peste”, with a screenplay by Denis Nielsen and Vitor Brandt and the franchise “Turma da Mônica – Lições”, with a screenplay by Thiago Dottori and Mariana Zatz (Screenplay collaborator: Marina Maria Iório. Adapted from the work “Turma da Mônica”, by Maurício de Souza and inspired by the Graphic Novel “Lessons” by Vitor Cafaggi and Lu Cafaggi), it received the award for Best Script for a Children's / Youth Work. The short film “Factory Floor”, with a screenplay by Nina Kopko and Tainá Mühringer, was awarded Best Short Film Screenplay. 

In the category that elected the Best Telenovela Script, the award was given to the Rede Globo telenovela “Um Lugar ao Sol”, a telenovela by Lícia Manzo, written by Leonardo Moreira and Rodrigo Castilho, with the collaboration of Carla Madeira, Cecília Giannetti, Dora Castellar and Martha Goes. As Best Script for a Reality or Variety Program, the winner was “Greg News with Gregorio Duvivier – Season 5” (HBO). The screenplay is by Gregorio Duvivier, Alessandra Orofino, Bruno Torturra, Denis Burgierman, Arnaldo Branco, Eduardo Branco, Luiza Miguez, Mariana Filgueiras, Carol Pires, Fernanda Mena and Amanda Célio.    

In the series, the award for Best Script for a Documentary Series went to “O Caso Evandro” (Globoplay), with screenplay Angelo Defanti, Arthur Warren, Ludmila Naves and Tainá Mühringer, with research and script collaboration by Ivan Mizanzuk. “Manhãs de Setembro – Season 1” (Prime Video), with a screenplay by Josefina Trotta, Alice Marcone, Marcelo Montenegro and Carla Meireles, based on an original idea by Miguel de Almeida, won the award for Best Screenplay for a Fiction Series – Drama. “Lov3” (Prime Video), created by Felipe Braga and Rita Moraes and written by Rafael Lessa, Duda de Almeida, Filipe Valerim Serra and Natália Sellani, with the collaboration of Elton de Almeida. 

The Screenwriter of the Year award, offered by Projeto Paradiso, was given to Ludmila Naves and the Abraço Award (Excellence in Screenwriting) was given to Gautier Lee.    

The Abra de Script Award was created in 2016, with the purpose of valuing writer-writers and highlighting the importance of the script in the production chain of the national audiovisual industry. The awardees are chosen by the association members themselves, in two rounds of voting. The award ceremony this year will be held in person again and will be held in São Paulo, at the Cinemateca Brasileira, which recently reopened its premises to receive the public.
