The 13 Whys it is a wonderful work. Masterfully written by Jay Asher, the book addresses very important issues such as suicide, bullying and how small attitudes, even if they seem innocent, can harm the lives of others. With such interesting subjects to be explored, this story deserved an adaptation and the Netflix took on this mission, debuting this Friday 13 Reason Why.

***This review is spoiler free***

The plot is focused on the suicide of Hannah (Katherine Langford), who recorded cassette tapes to explain the 13 reasons that led her to decide to kill herself. The tapes must be passed on to everyone who is mentioned on it and whoever is listening at that moment is Clay (Dylan Minnette), who happened to be in love with the girl. Hannah dedicates one side of the tapes to each person who somehow helped in this situation, chronicling the events in detail.

Unlike the original work, which only presents Clay discovering the reasons for Hannah's death, the series decides to explore the aftermath of this revelation, dedicating one episode per tape and in it showing the past - through the story told by Hannah - and the consequence that the discoveries had. on each character. In addition, there is an investigation going on, since in a book it would be acceptable to end without showing the legal outcome of such a plot, but in a series it would be very incomplete.

Adolescence is not an easy time and going through high school seems to be the biggest difficulty of this period - even more so if you study in these super liberal colleges in the USA. 13 Reasons Why focuses on intimately representing the bullying that practically every student suffers, but showing the damage it can cause when taken to the extreme. It's amazing how what triggers a reaction that leads a teenager to end her life is something everyday, it all starts with rumors and jokes typical of this school time, but they take such huge proportions that they completely get out of control, affecting her personal life and reaching to an unbearable level.

The production presents everything correctly, dividing each tape by episodes, just as in the book each chapter represents one side of the tapes and gets it right by adding Hannah's parents, focusing on how much her mother needed an explanation to be able to continue her life. However, perhaps by adapting a short work, the series puts many unnecessary elements throughout the season, giving the impression of being sluggish to get to 13 episodes. Clay goes through existential crises and is constantly struggling to finish listening to the recordings, generating long scenes that wouldn't need to be there to understand the plot. It is not uncommon to feel that they are prolonging a situation longer than they should just to meet the production goal.

The cast, formed almost entirely by newcomers, is a pleasant surprise. At no time do they leave anything to be desired in the performance, working with harmony and rapport. 13 Reasons Why it seems like a youth series and maybe it is at the beginning, but as events progress it gets more shocking and explicit, getting to the point of getting heavy. This change weighs heavily on an inexperienced actor, but it doesn't seem to be a problem for this team.

13 Reasons Why It's a good debut, but it could be so much more. Those who read the original work will certainly feel the difference, especially in the inclusions that break the suspenseful atmosphere that packs the book. However, it pays to explore issues that need to be explored. Depression, Bullying, disrespect and other controversies that are addressed are subjects that always need to be in the media and this service 13 Reasons Why do it right.

The full season of the series is now available on Netflix.
