Criticism | Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Last Thursday (15), Brazilian cinemas premiered the second film in the new franchise of Witch World in J.K. Rowling, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, sequence of the first film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016). The potterheads attended all over the country, even after two days of preview, to relive the magic and nostalgia of being a fan of Harry Potter.

Just over two hours and ten minutes long, the feature, scripted by Rowling, the creator of the entire fantastic universe that we saw in the seven books of Potter, delivers a dynamic, creative and electrifying film. It is impossible for you not to shiver with the action scenes, with the spells given and / or references. In fact, what spells, my friends, what spells!

The special effects are breathtaking, so it is very worth the financial investment to watch the feature in 3D, IMAX, XD or in other possible technologies besides the 2D. The movie asks you to. And although all of it has been filmed with these new technologies, it is not only used in the main scenes, but also in the entire film, including the quieter scenes and we see an interesting depth.

The scenarios are realistic, the costumes are impeccable - and have extended and improved in terms of quality as expected, since the first film -, the cores are of an absurd quality and our highlight goes to the witch community that lives within the Paris of 1927, where you have access through a statue, which serves as a portal to access it. Although it was only a few minutes, the Circus Arcanus deserves all the merit of beauty and creativity.

In fact, all the merit also goes to the duo MinaLima, that since the franchise Harry Potter, can reproduce exactly what the mind of Rowling thought. In fact, here's our tip for you who enjoy art design, visit the House of MinaLima, In London. The duo has a kind of museum where all their work, including Fantastic Beasts, are on display for the public. They are posters, illustrations, book covers, arts in general.

The way David Yates drove The Crimes of Grindelwald, nothing compares with the way that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and the last four films in the franchise Harry Potter were addressed. It's like Yates wanted to try something new, to dare, to venture into a new way of making cinema. Especially because, the script asked for it, to be different from the others. Yates he is known for his “round” way of making cinema, that kind of standard direction. In The Crimes of Grindelwald, he basically throws the rules out the window and makes everything fit perfectly with what we saw.

Much has been criticized for the Rowling as the second screenwriter Fantastic Beasts. The website Rotten Tomatoes, one of the portals that aggregate criticism from the world's most famous film and television productions, and a reference for so many others who venture into criticism, rated the film at an average of 40%, which for fans, who know and love the Witch World, is a very low passing grade.

The last November 9th took place in Brazil, the press booth of the film where the Warner Bros. Pictures, invited several journalists and entertainment columnists; bloggers and bloggers; youtubers and digital influencers, to watch the film - even before the preview - and later, produce content about the feature in their respective vehicles. And what we saw was a flood of negative criticism of the film and, mainly, the Rowling.

At the Twitter, a lot of opinions were divided. There were fans who liked it, others, loved it and still others, hated it. There were those who said that the script for the film was “empty, dull, without creativity, with holes and that Rowling as a screenwriter, she was a beautiful book author“. There were also, who strongly stated, that the British “needed a consultancy to write scripts and it was necessary to improve, because what we saw in more than two hours, could have been solved in an hour and forty minutes of film“.

The fact is that for us at Thunder, the film pleased us. AND Rowling managed to deliver a film beyond expectations. The film exceeded our expectations and the fact that the best was saved for the end, did not disappoint. The impression we had, is that we were watching a book, it was as if we opened a manuscript and the pages jumped to the screen. Rowling dared to write a script completely different from the first Fantastic Beasts and whoever said that nothing happened during the screening of the film, did not watch the same film as us.

A lot does happen and the film lives up to the title. Johnny Depp deliver one Grindelwald cruel, cold, calculating, with a speech and fascist characteristics and that puts Voldemort with all due respect, in the slipper. The first crimes that the villain commits, are in the first scenes of the film and he does not stop - it is necessary to watch to understand what crimes the wizard commits. When watching the film, it is clear why Warner and itself Rowling vehemently defended the permanence of Depp in the cast - we can't put warm cloths on what happened between the actor and his ex-wife, the also actress Amber Heard and you can read clicking here, on here and on here.

Another actor who also managed to express the true essence of a character, was Jude Law. The young Albus Dumbledore, appeared much less than we would have liked or expected, but in all its scenes, a real acting show was delivered to us. Law is the real Dumbledore what Rowling wrote. He could, without a doubt, star in a solo film for the character, as well as remake the Potter films, someday, and play a Dumbledore older.

Still on casting, it is worth noting the talent of the main quartet of the film. Eddie Redmayne, Dan Fogler, Katherine Waterston and Alison Sudol are (and remain) amazing with their respective Newt Scamander, Jacob Kowalski, Tina Goldstein and Queenie Goldstein. It is as if they had made these characters for years and in a reunion, like magic, they explode talent. They had some fan-services also and who would we say that finally, we would see Nicholas Flamel (Brontis Jodorowsky)? Well believe me, the famous alchemist and inventor of Philosophical stone, is not in the film just for decoration.

As well as the animals of Newt, who for this film, lived up to the title and put their magical and animal talents to play. It is still very beautiful to see the interaction, its treatment, love and care magizoologist with its fantastic fauna. New animals are in the feature and they are completely efficient so that the course of history takes the path it has. And see what each one is capable of doing in 3D IMAX, it's fantastic!

Speaking of novelty, the new actors and actresses who have joined the cast are exquisitely exquisite. The characters and performances of Callum turner and Zoë Kravitz, are incredible and in no way compare to the released trailers and synopsis. It is necessary to assist them in action, in addition to understanding the plot, understanding the motivation of each one within the plot. And if that “I love you!" in Leta Lestrange do not move you and do not make you understand that there are still good people within the Slytherin, honestly you didn't understand the movie. Here's a riddle: for who do you think Leta said that “I love you!“?

We suggest, to those who did not understand anything and who left the cinema full of questions, to review the film. In fact, review dubbed, because besides being very worthwhile, it will make more sense to watch the film a second, third or even fourth time. By the way, what a wonderful voice acting! We also suggest that you trust the genius and creativity of J.K. Rowlingbecause everything will work out and make a lot of sense in the next three films. Finally, the film pleased, exceeded expectations and entertained. And we can't wait for the next one, which unfortunately only in 2020.

  1. Look… Either you are being paid by Warner (or wanting to please consultants) or you are part of the small minority of people in the world (boring fans) who have seen this film differently… lol Because it is not possible that the longest shit in the whole saga of the Magical World of the Witches of JK receive so much praise for no reason ... The worst script of all, the most twisted ass that existed and absurd flaws made the movie that most people watched. So it is good to always separate the fan side from the critical side when writing ...

In fact, JK did create a new way of writing a script: meaningless; without beginning, middle and end; with fan service left and right all the time and bad twist ”. In fact, it's not even new, right? It is following industry trends… And the goal everyone already knows what it is: $$$

    • Hello, how are you?
So, a criticism is something very personal and partial 100%, different from reporting / story / news, which has an impartial character. In our case, we have a team in which we divided the task and it fell to me, the responsibility to watch the film and write the review.

For this to be done with 100% for sure, the film was watched twice by me: subtitled and dubbed and in both ways, I got the same positioning, however, the second experience watching the film, overlapped and justified the first, making the story that was shown, made more sense and that resulted in the current work, which was critical.

Thunder understands perfectly that there are people who did not like the film, did not understand or even, find themselves so far, with caramines on their heads, as the Sorting Hat told Harry, in the advent of "Chamber of Secrets". And it's natural to have it all, to feel it all. Imagine if a work, open or closed, in multimedia or article, made 100% of its consumers, like it or not? It wouldn't be funny, would you think?

Every kind of argument is valid, accepted and considered. In our case, the film really pleased, exceeded our expectations and overlapped in quality and depth of the plot, the 2016 film. As has been said, everything will make sense in the next films of the franchise. And when it is all over, we will watch it in a marathon format and even more sense, it will make it in our mind.

      Thanks for your comment! 😉
PS: I wish we were paid by Warner. Hehehe
