I Know What You Did Last Summer is a well-known horror film from the 90s and is now getting a reboot in the form of a series. In the beautiful Hawaiian setting, the series adapts from the events of the classic homonymous feature. A group of friends accidentally run over and kill a person and try to get out of it unscathed by hiding what happened. A year later, they are chased by a mysterious figure who claims to know what they've done and begins a deadly revenge.

The plot initially remains very faithful to the events of the original work, coming to visually represent the iconic scene of trampling very well. However, the story presents a risky change, the person run over is not a stranger, but someone very close to that group of friends who have known each other since kindergarten. This deepens the absurdity of the situation, increasing the gravity of an intimate group covering up the death of those they claimed to love, in addition to having parents involved in this lie later. It ends up working on the show, but there's a fine line between the unbelievable and the genius of a blatant criticism of the selfish behavior of human beings.

The protagonist does a great job in acting, which in this plot turns into two characters, twin sisters. Madison Iseman manages to differentiate very well which of the sisters is in the scene, to the point of leading the audience to have totally different opinions about them and even spoils the great revelation at the end of the initial episode, since their work is so dense that the viewer already knows how to distinguish each other in the first few minutes. Even though Iseman is a big standout, the rest of the cast leaves nothing to be desired and delivers a well-built core.

The update to the narrative works very well, raising the quality of the series in relation to the criticism made in the film. Abusing the digital age, the plot uses the numerous resources it provides to address revealing issues, such as the dangers of the unbridled search for followers that can lead to extreme actions, as well as mistakes that can harm young people. Sexual exposure and oversights with images in the digital age are some of the recurrent subjects on the screen.

I Know What You Did Last Summer it's still a horror and continues to show several deaths, as is expected from this adaptation. With a more extensive cast, which includes one more person in the group of friends who previously were only 4, there is much more room to explore a large number of deaths and the series takes advantage of that, in the initial four episodes that were already provided to critics. you can see that many creative murders will take place. Initially, the work maintains a more discreet tone and for about two episodes it looks a lot like a teenage thriller, recalling the lies and change of identity of The Lying Game and even borrowing the same name from Pretty Little Liars for suspected sending messages and videos. When he actually presents the deaths, he manages to take some of that impression, giving a hint of horror that is also growing, at first showing the worst part only in videos and then dedicating himself to scenes more worthy of Slash.

With more screen time, it is possible to explore more of the characters and this the series does well. Investing in diversity in an interesting way, the plot deals with a case among homosexuals that is not there just to make a presence, but rather to raise suspicions of those who might be terrorizing the group. Various relationships and secrets surround the events, turning everyone into potential suspects, in addition to taking the opportunity to make small current criticisms, such as a totally wrong approach by a police officer to a black character.

I Know What You Did Last Summer is a great version of a movie that deserved an update. Investing in always more, it's a series that puts more mystery, more interesting characters, more crimes and more criticisms to a plot that already made a good complaint about irresponsible attitudes, but with the limitations of the time.
