The explanation behind the myths

Myths, legends and even folklore feed the horror industry. Without them, we wouldn't have half the current works that fans like so much. Some are ancient, dating from past centuries and are alive in the stories to this day, others are based on more recent facts, but regardless of the time and intensity of each myth, it will always please horror fans.

Lore, new original series from Amazon Prime, is based on the eponymous podcast that explores exactly that theme, telling the real stories behind these myths and exploring their origins.

Merging a representation of the tale with a narrative explaining the historical and scientific facts, Lore it is more than a series of terror, its historical content makes it educational and differentiates it from current productions.

In the three episodes we watched, provided by the company, we followed three stories that are completely different in content, but very interesting. In the premiere episode, the series explores the terrible time when it was common to consider the person dead, only to discover that he was actually buried alive and ended up dying in the coffin. It was at this time that a superstition related to the deadly tuberculosis started one of the biggest supernatural myths: the Vampire.

The second, on the other hand, exposes a fact that is more realistic, but equally hideous. The plot follows the beginning of the dangerous practice of lobotomy and its rise, also taking the opportunity to show cases that did not work - one of the most famous was the case of Rosemary Kennedy, sister of the famous president.

Finally, the latter delves into one of the legends best known to those who know the superstitions of Great Britain: the fairies who switch places with the person, taking their “soul” and entering their body. Holland Roden, known for its role in Teen Wolf, stars in this plot set in Ireland, which proves to be the most interesting because it also delves into the machismo of the time.

Lore it started with the promise of being an interesting horror, with several isolated cases it would certainly please most of the public. However, in reality it is not really a terror. The episodes are just set in a climate of tension, credit to the great direction that knows where to keep the right cuts and angles, which together with the photo pulled to gray tones and the hideous soundtrack, dictates the mood without having to resort to explicit scenes.

With a huge informative content, the series stands out for being much more than just a horror production. Without using strong scenes or appealing to sexual content, the series will certainly please. However, if you expect scares and sleepless nights, this is not the series for you.

Lore opens on October 13, a Friday the 13th, exclusively for members of the Amazon Prime Video.
