Mariana's Secret Garden, written and directed by Sergio Rezende, premieres on September 30th in Brazilian cinemas. The plot shows a period of separation, maturation and reconstruction of the romance between Mariana (Andréia Horta) and John (Gustavo Vaz), a couple in love who seem to have the perfect life. The relationship between the two seems to be indestructible, however, they begin to wear out due to the impossibility of having a child and what could have been resolved with dialogue and understanding on both sides becomes a space filled with indifference, hurt and resentment. The leading couple ends up traumaticly and the consequences for both are painful scars on the soul. In a very real and true way, the film works the pains and loves of loving someone. In a complicated moment that all humanity is going through, films that portray the bonds between people are increasingly essential.

The film has a well-constructed script and has a very interesting plot and makes us question how far we will go in search of something. It is possible to understand both sides. On the one hand, João, who isolates himself, withdraws, distances himself from Mariana, as he is sterile and cannot give his wife what she wants so much, a child. Mariana, on the other hand, after her distance from her husband, the coldness with which he has treated her makes the protagonist look for other means of having what she wants, although guilt haunts her, she goes anyway. However, according to the character's speech, when it comes to judgment, no one reaches out to the woman. Both were wrong, but she was more stoned by others' criticisms of having done what she did.

After five years of a stressful separation, João decides to set off on a long journey by bicycle to meet Mariana again and convince her that the romance should never have ended. Does love resist everything? Then, they meet again and little by little confront each other, kiss, exchange confidences, seek their way back from one to the other and in the midst of pain and intense passion, they try to connect and get it their way. It is interesting to see how each one moved forward, through the ups and downs, they recovered, learned, accepted and sought to understand the past so that they could move forward in the present.

One of the characters who has a brief passage in the plot says that "Sometimes, to have the good, you have to go through the bad" and it is something that sums up the essence of the work well. Love is called into question and resists, because it is a strong bond that, even with the hurt and resentment, survives. Inspired by one of his documentaries, “O Cinema É meu Jardim” (2004), Sergio Rezende had the partnership of his daughter, the writer, poet and film editor Maria Rezende.

The soundtrack is in harmony with the feature. The performances are impeccable. The photography is beautiful, but the spaces that were used as a location reveal the natural beauty of Brazil. The feature “O Jardim Secreto de Mariana” was filmed over four weeks at the Instituto Inhotim, in Minas Gerais, and in Nova Friburgo, in Rio de Janeiro. In addition, the feature film is directed and written by filmmaker Sergio Rezende, known for works such as “O Homem da Capa Preta”, “Guerra de Canudos” and “O Patient – O Caso Tancredo Neves”. critique-the-secret-garden-of-marianaIn a very real and true way, the film works the pains and loves of loving someone. The script is tightly knit, the direction knew how to balance drama and romance. The actors acted brilliantly and were able to truly convey the ups and downs of a relationship. Here, fiction and reality go hand in hand and this feature film is yes, an ode to love that survives the difficulties of life. Worth the entertainment.
