Renovating an old franchise with a female version is an audacious and very dangerous project. Depending on the way it is conducted, the film can become a noteworthy but failed attempt, as in the case of Ghostbuster, or show that a good female team can outperform the male team. Eight Women and a Secret fits the second option.

Choosing not to touch the predecessor plots, the feature Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock), sister of Danny Ocean (George Clooney), who has the same gifts for planning and executing blows. The opening scene is very similar to the one presented by Danny in Eleven men and a secret. Debbie has just come out of prison with a very audacious goal, to steal a millionaire jewel at the Met's gala. To do this, you need to assemble a powerful team, which mainly relies on the help of your former partner Lou (Cate Blanchett).

Led by this talented duo, the work rescues the style of the franchise, showing the steps of the big blow while presenting each character. With an incredible team of talented women, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna and Awkwafina-, the plot develops in a coherent way, with a theme that fits with the strong women.

However, even with the whole team doing a beautiful job in the performances, Anne Hathaway deserves a highlight. Finally playing a futile role, the actress shows again that she has no problem getting out of the ordinary in her roles and delivers her version of shallow woman, but still very intelligent, very well.

Perhaps the greatest merit of Eight Women and a Secret be it not trying to fit feminism by showing women in branches known to be predominantly male, but investing in showing each one in her comfort zone, even exercising their roles better than men. The proof of this is evidenced in a dialogue between Debbie and Lou, where Debbie explains the reason for not wanting men on the team, arguing that: to steal a millionaire necklace from Cartier at the Met Gala, you must go unnoticed. We women are often ignored. Why not use this to our advantage?

Eight Women and a Secret gets it right by maintaining the original tone of a film that won over audiences, investing in smart women and some nostalgic stakes. With great actresses in the leadership, the feature rescues the theme with style, without leaving even space for comparison with the predecessors.
