Rob Zombie, director and producer of Halloween (2007) and Halloween II (2009), returns to theaters with 3 From Hell, the film is a sequel to House of 1000 Corpses (2003) and The Devil’s Rejects (2006), bringing The Firefly family back.
The Firefly Family
Their first appearance was at House of 1000 Corpses, where on Halloween’s eve, two traveling couples decided to visit a museum of a local legend called Dr. Satan and end up meeting the Firefly family by giving Baby a ride (Sheri Moon Zombie, Rob Zombie’s wife) and finally being murdered by them.
In the sequel, The Devil’s Rejects, the family house is targeted by the police, led by Sheriff John Wydell, who is seeking revenge for his brother’s death, however, Baby and her brother Otis (Bill Moseley) manage to escape the shooting and meet with their father, Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig), leading the three of them to flee from the authorities and leaving a trail of carnage and blood wherever they pass.
3 From Hell
Returning to the events of the last movie through reports, it’s shown that Captain Spaulding, Otis and Baby, even after being shot and with virtually no chance of survival, resist the gunshot wounds and causes a ruckus as the media say they returned from Hell, this is probably the inspiration for the movie’s title. The movie goes forward to their time in prison until Otis’s unlikely escape from jail and his efforts to get her sister out too.
In the best of the gore style, Rob spared no use of blood and violence, showing that his characters really show no compassion for anyone but their own family and themselves and that literally anything goes for getting what they want, no one who crosses the path of Firefly clan is safe, life has no value.
Accompanying the ploys to get Baby out of jail and with the help of a new member, Coltrane (Richard Brake), and all the killing that surrounds them, makes no room to breathe with relief, making the audience always be alert to who will be the next victims.
Captain Spaulding’s almost complete absence is noted, with the character appearing only at the beginning of the film, according to the director, Sid Haig was hospitalized before the start of the shootings, as he felt down at his home, and due to his condition was allowed to record only if it was not exhaustive for his body. Unfortunately, the actor died on September 21st of this year, due to complications due to a lung infection.
Even though it’s a Horror movie, the action elements with all the shootings, and not-so-conventional weapons being used, are present all the time, which makes us catch our breath all the time. The franchise continuation, even after so long of its predecessor, does not lack in cruelty, strong scenes, representing well the style of its director.
It’s a good call for all the horror movies lovers who want to see an exciting and full of great murderer scenes for this upcoming Halloween.
