Before starting this review, go to a “review” for some sites. Every film has a genre like fiction, adventure, terror and so on. There are those that are original productions, that is, with an unprecedented script and those, the most common, based on some style of work, from literature, comics, games etc.

The Orphans is based on the book The Screw Turn, book written in 1898 by Henry James. It is never qualified as a horror or suspense writing, as it "is too big to be a short story and too short to be a novel".

And for the most part, critics describe it as a “book that talks about pedophilia and repressed sex”, because it is a Victorian work.

Therefore, the film's approach follows paths that are nothing other than horror features. So, if you have read a review that Os Orphans is a boring and sleepy film instead of scares, you already know that whoever wrote it, is far below the literary knowledge on which the film is based.

But is the movie good?

Yes! The Orphans follows a different path and at the same time so well known for a psychological thriller. Here we follow a teacher, Kate, lived by Mackenzie Davis (The Terminator), who will live in the mansion and teach classes to the youngest family, Flora (Brooklynn Prince, from “Florida Project”). She sees herself in the child and feels an empathy, justifying all the reasons why she should leave the school where she teaches to be the girl's private teacher. But when she arrives, she is faced with situations that are outside her lifestyle and also meets her older brother Miles (Finn Wolfhard, from “Stranger Things”), which is the big question mark of Os Orfãos.

From now on, criticism of the model of how children are educated and even treated as “purebloods”, already demonstrates how much parents, grandparents, among others, make mistakes in treating their children like kings, thus making them true dictators.

In this way, the film runs through dark stretches of the human psyche where everything that is new will destroy your knowledge in many ways and even how you see the world. These are passages that deceive the central character with games of shadows, noises and even the way he treats two children, where in certain moments giving affection and a hug in one is totally valid, but for the boy, it is totally different, even reaching showing outrage and disgust. And all this for no apparent reason.

Crítica | Os Órfãos, onde o terror é o desconhecido 1

Of course, the film leads the viewer to think that the mansion can be haunted, but at various times the human brain is the real villain.

And in this way the feature presents us with many certainties that end up becoming uncertainties and vice versa during the plot. He deceives you, as does the poster, which throws you a way to interpret his call: Beware of children. Yes, take care of them, don't think they are that good, or are they? How to know? This is the maze presented to the human mind by Kate.

There are so many doubts that in many moments the film resembles horror games like silent Hill, among others that leave the player in doubt if that is really real or a character's mind-boggling trip in a dream world. It is also worth mentioning other films that abuse this insanity of the Japanese and Korean genre.

The Orphans is not an easy movie to understand if you just want to watch and be taken for another adventure. But it is totally immersive and full of theories about depression, treatment with children, among many other disorders, which becomes a real roller coaster with higher than low. And even the lows will be scary, as human nature is never so easy to get carried away, unless it is to its ruin.

Why should I watch?

As it is in the title of the review, the real terror for anyone is the unknown. The Orphans own this on several levels, ranging from a large mansion where it is simple to get lost in cramped and old rooms, for its property that looks more like a world in black and white and that has forgotten to have colors. It continues because of our doubts and insecurities and especially in wanting to see the pain of others in our lives, to the point that it becomes so real, that even ghosts can really hurt you.
