Based on the eponymous comic written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Cliff Chiang, Paper Girls is new original bet Prime Video.

The plot a group of girls, Erin (Riley Lai Nelet), Mac (Sofia Rosinsky), Tiffany (Camryn Jones) and KJ (Fine Strazza), who work delivering newspapers in 1988. On the morning after Halloween they experience an event that will totally change their lives: The sky begins to glow with purple lights as if the world is ending. Scared, they run towards Erin's house, but when they get there they find everything different and a woman living alone. Suddenly, Erin realizes that the woman is herself but an adult in the future, in 2019. Not knowing what is happening, they need to unravel this mystery so they can go back to the past while saving the world from the future.

the showrunner Christopher C. Rogers does an interesting job of adaptation, which promises to please comic book fans. However, the series does not take place in the 80's/90's, as the beginning of the HQ's, the events are quickly taken to the future. In a time when productions that rescue the nostalgia of that era, it seems like a strange choice, but, according to Rogers himself, the reason is noble, is to avoid glorifying the 80s because it was a difficult time for many people, like the LGBTQI+ community.

As in the original work, the series invests in representation, especially among its protagonists. At the height of their 12 years, when they begin to understand their place in the world, the girls form an eclectic group, with an African-American, an Asian, a Jew and a “problem girl” who had to become strong because of the difficult living conditions. life you had. Interestingly, in their own way, they are ahead of their time even before they travel into the future, as they have mastered an area of work that was predominantly male. The narrative presents this well, showing the risk they run and the safety measures they need to take to avoid being abused during their working hours.

Featuring a simple plot but with several interesting layers, Paper Girls uses fiction to show the growth and dilemmas of four totally different girls, who are forced to come together for the greater good. By putting each teenager to know their “future self”, the production becomes a great psychological teaching, putting in direct contrast the childhood dreams with the reality that the world forces you to become and raises the question of when the decisions start to take a toll. Expensive price for every mistake.

The cast represents these dilemmas very well, giving life to the characters well formatted in the script. The children's core does an incredible job of acting, even overshadowing the adult versions at various times. They carry all the most dramatic events of the plot with mastery, standing out for the quality of acting. The support nucleus, which has "good guys" and "villains" and some adult versions that change as the story goes, leaves nothing to be desired, providing the necessary support for the scenes and delivering a beautiful service.

Paper Girls is a series that will appeal to all audiences, for intelligently approaching how each character is in the past and what they will become in the future, without falling into the comical traps and full of clichés with works that follow the same theme.

The 8 episodes of the 1st season of Paper Girls premiere on July 29 at Amazon Prime Video.
