Criticism | Tom Hanks exudes creativity in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

The film A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood starts while we watch the children's program Fred Rogers. It's amazing to think how Tom Hanks seems to have been born to play this character. With direction Marielle Heller, this character goes much further and it is wonderful how they portray the presenter, as if he were a saint.

But, as always, we are undergoing tests, so it would be no different with Fred Rogers and he is tested when he meets the investigative journalist Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys), which from that meeting, throughout the film, provokes discussions about grudge and forgiveness.

I like the way the director puts Rogers' skill and pleasure in teaching and helping people. It is very explanatory, showing many details of various situations that even make a little sense because it is a children's program; the way the director jokes, but without exaggerating, about the public's perception of the man, and it's impossible not to identify with Vogel because, the question is, is there anyone who really manages to be good all the time? Is he really good or does he pretend to be? He manages to separate mr. Rogers of the real Fred? And, in the film, that answer does not appear for sure. And that was what I liked, as the director challenges the audience to draw their own conclusions.

We can also see that the script explores the Vogel family drama and how it is shown, as if it were really one of the episodes of the program presented by Rogers. The blocks in Lloyd's neighborhood are presented by means of colored miniatures used in the setting of a program, and one of the scenes that is simple yet touching is when Mr. Rogers challenges the journalist to remain silent for a minute and reflect on all the people who have had an influence on his life. And that ends up leading the viewer to do the same. Not to mention that this film has an element of self-help, which is based on the presenter's lessons on how to deal with his feelings.

I also like how the character Andrea Vogel (Susan Kelechi Watson), Lloyde's wife, takes on the role of an understanding woman, who is there to help her husband with his emotional problems and propel him to be his best version. But I like to see how the characters develop in a certain way, and how Lloyde and Rogers' friendship flows throughout the film.

But why should I watch?

Because it is a film that is both educational and humorous, it ends up being a production that brings great teachings, because who does not face problems in the family? We can identify with some characters, as it shows the drama that the Vogel family goes through, more specifically father and son, and how an outside view can make a difference. This feature also shows how we can deal with feelings that we don't want to release. It is a very family film in which we can learn and laugh, and it makes us feel like we are watching at home, as it makes us feel at ease. Not to mention that Tom Hanks' performance is incredible!
