The BBC finally confirmed one of television's worst kept secrets: Jodie Whittaker and the showrunner Chris Chibnall are leaving Doctor Who.

The duo has been at the helm of Tardis since 2017 and will leave BBC Studios' iconic sci-fi franchise next year. Before they leave, they will bring fans Season 13 and three full-length specials in 2022, the last of which will mark the end of the Thirteenth Doctor.

Whittaker will be remembered as the first woman to play the Timelord, bringing warmth and comedy to the role. His departure has long been speculated and is in line with his predecessors, including David Tennant and Matt Smith, which also completed three seasons before moving on to other projects.

Whittaker was cast by Chibnall, who came in for Steven Moffat as showrunner of Doctor Who for four years. he also brought Tosin Cole (Ryan), Mandip Gill (Yaz) and Bradley Walsh (Graham) as well as climbed Sacha Dhawan like the Teacher and Jo Martin like the Fugitive Doctor.

“My heart is filled with love for this show, the team that makes it, the fans that watch it and what it has brought to my life,” said Whittaker. “I can't thank Chris enough for trusting me with his amazing stories. We knew we wanted to ride this wave side by side and pass the baton together. So here we are, weeks away from completing the best job I've ever had. ”

Chibnall, who is leaving alongside the executive producer Matt Strevens, added: “Jodie and I made a “three series and exit” pact with each other at the start of this once-in-a-lifetime blast. So now our shift is over and we are returning the Tardis keys. Jodie's magnificent and iconic Doctor exceeded all our expectations. ”

The first of next year's specials will air on New Year's Day, while it will be followed by a second episode in the spring. Whittaker's latest round of the Tardis will be broadcast in autumn 2022 and will form part of the BBC's centenary celebrations.
