In Two Popes, director Fernando Meirelles and screenwriter Anthony McCarten bring the behind-the-scenes story of one of the most dramatic transitions of power in the past 2000 years. Frustrated by the direction of the Church, Cardinal Bergoglio (Jonathan Pryce) asks Pope Benedict XVI for permission (Anthony Hopkins) to retire in 2012. Instead, facing scandals and his own insecurity, the introspective pope calls on his greatest critic and future successor in Rome to reveal a secret that would shake the foundations of the Catholic Church. What is seen within the walls of the Vatican, then, is the dispute between tradition and progress, guilt and forgiveness, and two very different men confronting their pasts in search of common ground to forge the future of a billion followers all around the world.

Two Popes will be available on Netflix at December 20 and in some Brazilian cinemas as of December 5.
