Inspired by a real story
The series is based on the New York Times bestselling book of the same name called Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors and the Drug Company that Addicted America. Written by Beth Macy, the book tells the story of the crisis that the United States has suffered for years with opioids and its indiscriminate use in the country – which has generated a succession of addicts to controlled drugs, in addition to being responsible for a high rate of deaths.

The participation marks Keaton's first role in a miniseries since The Company, in 2007.
Where was Dopesick filmed?
Dopesick was filmed primarily in Virginia. Beth Macy asked that it be filmed there, as most of the book took place in Virginia, and the author wanted the show to reflect her romance.
The series wasn't just filmed in a Virginia town. Dopesick was filmed in hopewell, bowling green, lexington and Clifton Forge. The production team even hired 200 local cast members to make the Virginia-centric story as authentic as possible.
