The screenwriter, producer and director of Dune, Denis Villeneuve, discovered Frank Herbert's novel, which explores humanity's relationship with nature, in adolescence, when he thought about becoming a filmmaker or biologist.

In preparing for his role as the head of House Atreides, Duke Leto, actor Oscar Isaac found inspiration in the films of Toshiro Mifune, a mainstay of Akira Kurosawa's films, who often played a strong and powerful figure.

Paul Atreides' character is around 15/16 years old during the events that take place in Denis Villeneuve's adaptation; actor Timothée Chalamet, who plays Paul in the film, was 23 at the time of filming, but, according to Villeneuve, “Paul is an old soul.
