American publisher Behemoth Comics launches “Carnívora”, by the cartoonist from Rio de Janeiro PJ Kaiowá

The illustrator and comic book artist PJ Kaiowá has been standing out more and more in the world of comics, developing a striking style, in search of a Brazilian pop culture. Proof of this is the launch of your thriller policeman "carnivore” by the American publisher Behemoth Comics. The magazine, which was released in 2015 by crowdfunding, had its US release this week, along with vinyl featuring songs written by musician and producer Jay Ray.

Carnívora is a horror album that tells the story of Carlos, a civil policeman looking for his missing fiancée. As the only clue, an address: Morro da Caveira. One of the largest community complexes in Rio de Janeiro. But not only that, intriguing accounts from the locals draw attention. They all tell the same story, that the top of the hill is haunted by small carnivorous creatures, similar to children, that bring terror and death to the surroundings. That's where the search for Carlos begins. That's where he'll find what he least expects. A story to reflect on the price of our choices, which can bring out the real monsters.

“That's when I started to understand that we could develop our pop culture, with our elements, our dramas, our way of solving things. Make every miscegenation marked on the skin and structure, a strong and authentic identity. After all, that's who we are!”, says PJ, who highlights the fiction with black and white lines, which brings an organized layout, using double pages to highlight the scenarios, in addition to creating a perspective with a 3D feel, where it looks that the scene leaves the page.

On the way to get to Behemoth, PJ highlights that “they are one of those things that really had to happen. Eventually I do prospecting, put together a project with my work and start shooting for publishers. One of them was Behemoth. And at the same time I received their feedback. “Hey, what do you mean?! Nobody answers right away.” An answer takes months, even years, if at all. But the editor came all excited saying that they were already preparing the e-mail to send me. They even had the magazine in their hands, which they had acquired at CCXP through a representative. I was very well received and now we are talking about possible new projects”, he adds.

The magazine is also available on the PJ website throughout the month of April in celebration of the relaunch. Learn more at https://www.pjdraw.com/
