It is a milestone in the history of Walt Disney Animation Studios

The singer Olga Lucia Vives, in turn, gives the voice to Mirabel.

Songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda

Composer, singer, actor and producer Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator and protagonist of the acclaimed Broadway musical Hamilton and creator of the Disney movie songs Moana, is behind the music of Charm. The artist composed eight original songs for the film while participating in the filmmakers' research trip to Colombia.

Zootopia filmmaking team meeting

Behind Charm  is the team of filmmakers who brought to the big screen Zootopia: This city is the Bicho, the Oscar-winning animated film® 2016. They are Byron Howard, Jared Bush and Clark Spencer, director, co-director and producer of the animation, respectively. This time around, directors Howard and Bush were joined by co-director Charise Castro Smith, while Yvett Merino joined forces with Spencer as producer.

Colombia as a setting

Charm is inspired by the culture, traditions, people, geography, flora and fauna of Colombia. As part of the film's development process, the filmmakers traveled to Colombia and visited Bogotá, Cartagena, Barichara, Salento, Palenque and Valle de Cocora. There they discovered the diverse, vibrant and exuberant beauty of the country, which was the starting point for the creation of the universe of Charm. In addition, the team assembled a group of consultants called the Colombian Cultural Fund, which included experts in anthropology, clothing, botany, music, language, architecture, and other aspects of the country.

Let's meet the Madrigals…

the heart of Charm it is, without a doubt, the extraordinary Madrigal family, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant village, in a wonderful place known as an Enchantment. The charisma and – worth the redundancy – the charm of this fun clan will win over audiences all over the world. They are: Abuela Alma, the matriarch of the family and Mirabel's grandmother; Julieta and Agustín, Mirabel's parents; Isabela and Luisa, Mirabel's sisters; Félix and Pepa, Mirabel's funny and eccentric uncles; Dolores, Camilo and Antonio, Mirabel's cousins; and Bruno, Mirabel's missing uncle, of whom no one is allowed to speak.

…And through them to discover more about our own families

Charm is, first and foremost, a story about families, exploring the inspiring and sometimes complicated relationships within them, especially those where multiple generations live together in the same house. “You can live with your parents and brothers and sisters and still not know what they go through. You don't know all your failures. You don't know about the things they don't talk about. What are the family secrets that no one tells? That was fascinating for us.”, says director Byron Howard. In this sense, while the Madrigals are a family like no other because of their gifts and the magical environment in which they live, we can all identify with their dynamics, their conflicts, their challenges, and their triumphs. And through them, we can better understand our own families and ourselves.

There will be a lot of magic

The cultural legacy of Colombia that inspired the film also includes magical realism, a type of storytelling in which the mythical or peculiar is presented as everyday. In CharmUndoubtedly, there is magic, a lot of magic, and it is expressed in many ways. On the one hand, it is evident through elements such as the gifts that family members possess, such as the gift of strength of Luisa, Mirabel's sister, or the gift of controlling the weather with emotions, as Pepa, the aunt of Mirabel. The magic is also revealed in the fantastic qualities of the “Casita”, where the Madrigals live, and is, of course, strongly associated with Colombia's own naturally wonderful places, where the landscape is full of extraordinary possibilities.

Features a special guest by Maluma

Maluma is the English and Spanish voice of Mariano, the city's heartthrob and future fiancé of Isabel, the family prodigy and Mirabel's perfect sister. “Enchantment is such a magical film”, said Maluma. “I'm from Colombia and the story is about a Colombian family. I am very proud to be part of this beautiful story. It means a lot to me because I am passionate about sharing cultural values and stories about my country on a global level.”

Original song by Carlos Vives

The gateway to the wonderful musical universe of the film is “Colombia, my charm”, the original song played in the trailer, performed by the Colombian singer, songwriter and actor Warmth you live“This song is a celebration of Colombia's magical diversity”, says Vives. "I can't wait to see how the music merges with the images and characters inspired by the 'charm' of Colombians."
