AMERICAN INDIGENOUS LEGENDS

Wendigo (also found as “winddsgvigo” or “wetiko”) is the central spirit of the film. Known as a deer-like mythological creature and/or evil spirit in Native American tribes mythology, legend has it that it lives in the forests of northern Nova Scotia, Canada's east coast and the Great Lakes region of Canada. The Wendigo is widely known as a destructive and cannibalistic creature associated with winter, cold and hunger.

ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVATION

The creature in the film is a particularly poignant metaphor for the turbulent relationships humans have with Earth today. The Wendigo carries the message that if someone has invaded a territory they were not authorized to invade, it will fix this situation. It is from this premise that Lucas' father is possessed by the creature's spirit, as he was using a cave to produce drugs.

CHILD ABUSE

Child abuse can be seen through young Lucas Weaver's (Jeremy T. Thomas) relationship with his father who is possessed by the spirit of the Wendigo - the mythological ancestral creature. Even with his father possessed, Lucas goes to great lengths to take care of him and his younger brother. The theme is also addressed with Julia's (Keri Russell) memoirs and with her brother Paul's lines. “There's a dark family history between them,” says actress Keri Russell, hinting at the abuse Julia and her brother Paul suffered as children. "Perhaps as a distraction from it all, she becomes intrigued, then obsessed, by a distraught student of hers."
