Warning: Contains Spoilers for the 16th episode of the 16th season of Grey's Anatomy.
After a long time with several small explanations of the reason, Alex Karev, interpreted by Justin Chambers had its official departure in Grey's Anatomy.
In the March 5 episode, entitled Leave a Light On, Chambers' longtime character revealed in a heartfelt letter that he met with Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl), one of the series’s original interns and Alex’s ex-wife. In letters sent to his current wife Jo (Camilla Luddington), Miranda (Chandra Wilson) and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), Alex explained that he found Izzie and found out that she had children. So he decided to stay and make up for the five years he lost with them, creating them now.
“It is almost impossible to say goodbye to Alex Karev. This is true for me and all the writers of Grey's Anatomy, as well as for fans, ”said showrunner Krista Vernoff in a statement. “We love to write Alex. And we love watching the nuanced portrait of Justin Chambers. For 16 seasons, 16 years, we grew up alongside Alex Karev. We were frustrated by his limitations and inspired by his growth and we came to love him deeply and consider him one of our best friends. We will miss you terribly. And we will always be grateful for its impact, in our show, in our hearts, in our fans, in the world. ”
Alex had been off the screen since the November 14th episode. The last few episodes provided explanations of his absence, which included his on-screen wife Jo mentioning that he was not returning her calls. In the last episode, Jo read the letter silently, while Chambers' narration dictated the words to the audience.
"I'm sorry," began the letter. “You deserve more than a letter. This cowardice, this letter, is officially the worst thing I've ever done. But it's about me, Jo; It's not about you. It is not what you deserve. You deserve it and earned something better than that. ”
Scenes of Jo were interspersed with a walk through the memory of Jo and Alex, as well as Alex and some other essential people in his life, including his father and his newly discovered children.
The letter said that Alex loves how “bright and brave” Jo is and how she made him better, or at least “kinder”. He wrote that he loves Jo, but he also loves Izzie.
"There was a part of me that always wondered, that always wanted to know, that always seemed to leave things unresolved - unfinished," he wrote about Izzie. “I got in touch with Izzie and we started talking, and it scared me, because it felt like there was no time - as if Izzie and I were kind of frozen together in time. And now, now we're not. “
Izzie was "on a farm in Kansas, in this incredible place in the middle of nowhere," he continued. And that's where he was, too. “Izzie had my kids, and I know you understand what that really means. I know that you of all people know why I cannot leave now, “he wrote. “I have a chance to make this whole family and I hope you love me back enough to let me go. I need to give these children the family that you and I never had.
He also told Jo that he meant it when he asked her to marry him, and she was not just "let's get a dog". But the attraction of having children was too much for him. ”I had this family that I never knew I had on this insane farm and I wanted that everything I ever wanted didn't have to hurt him in the process,” he wrote.
He concluded the letter by thanking her for taking care of him. He also said that he has already signed divorce papers and left everything to her, including his actions in the Gray Sloan“You deserve all the best in this life, Jo. I hope you find someone better than me “finished.
Grey's Anatomy is currently showing its 16th season.
