The HBO Max attended the third day of Rio2C conferences, Rio Creative Conference, with executives participating in discussions in three panels: “The future of melodrama at the heart of original content”; “Original content focused on the audience”; and an HBO Max special, "The New Boom in Non-Fictional Content."
The panel presented by HBO Max, which addressed the recent growth of non-fiction content after the period of confinement that the world has lived, was attended by Sergio Nakasone, Regional Director of Development of Non-Fiction Content at Warner Bros. Latin America Discovery, by Verônica Villa, Head of Non-Fictional Content Development at HBO Max, by Murilo Rosa, host of A BRIDGE: THE BRIDGE BRAZIL, the new reality show by HBO Max Brasil, and also by presenter Angélica, host of ASTRAL JOURNEY.
According to Nakason, “since the pandemic, there has been an excellent reception of new non-fictional formats that allow us to be more daring in our content and go beyond what we have seen so far“. A consumption trend that is observed in Brazil as well. "It is observed that the Brazilian consumption of unscripted content has increased in the last four years and a fundamental factor for this was the pandemic, as people were confined to their homes looking for a human connection, contact with each other.“, adds Villa.
Keeping an eye on this phenomenon, it has been confirmed that HBO Max will launch the documentary series in the coming months BRUTAL PACT: DANIELA PEREZ CASE, directed by Tatiana Issa and Guto Barra, about the murder of Gloria Perez's daughter in the 1990s, and CCP: THE SECRET POWER, which narrates the recent history of one of the most important criminal organizations in the world that emerged from Brazilian prisons.
In addition, there are also plans for this semester THE BRIDGE: THE BRIDGE BRAZIL, a reality show in which celebrities do not have privileges, hosted by Murilo Rosa. "It's a very popular reality show in England and Spain, and unlike anything we've seen in Brazil, it gains a local voice by scaling participants already known by the Brazilian audience.“, explains the HBO Max host.
In the panel “The future of melodrama at the center of original content”, the new formats of this genre were discussed in an attempt to bring back viewer engagement. Among the guests was Mônica Albuquerque, Head of Talent Management and Teleseries Development at Warner Bros. Discovery, which assessed that there are “an undeniable and profound change in the way the public is consuming content today, parallel to the return of melodrama in series that bring narratives that the public actually recognizes.“.
The “Audience Focused Original Content” panel addressed the impact on audience reach when defining a title's target audience. According to Marcelo Tamburri, Head of Fiction Content Development for HBO Max, “Algorithms and audience studies help us to improve intuition, and they are important when thinking about the uniqueness of that project, that is, the development of a unique perspective of a production“.
The Rio Creative Conference will take place until May 1st at Rio2C, one of the biggest creativity and innovation events in Latin America, at Cidade das Artes, located in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro.
