Hulu debuted the spinoff of How I Met Your Mother, titled How I Met Your Father, with two episodes. Even not being directly linked to its predecessor, the new series took advantage of the fans of the old sitcom and left some branches that cross and pay homage to it.

For starters, the classic homage is right at the opening. In a new version, photos and the same music are used that cause nostalgia in any viewer of How I Met Your Mother, an excerpt from “Hey Beautiful” by The Solids that packed all the episodes of the original work. This is pretty clear to anyone who knows the series, but what only the most assiduous fans will know is that this song is by the band. The Solids, which features the creators of How I Met Your Mother, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, among its members. Bays and Thomas are producers of How I Met Your Father, together with Pamela Fryman, who directed the pilots for both series, and more episodes of How I Met Your Mother than anyone else.

The pilot introduces the audience to the show's cast, including Hilary Duff (Lizzie Maguire), Chris Lowell (Veronica Mars) and Josh Peck (Drake and Josh). Although these characters are not directly related to the cast of How I Met Your Mother, they take the opportunity to create a core similar to the original, with personalities and personal searches that refer to the group of the previous work. Duff retraces the path of Ted Mosby, in a modernized version, already Sid (Suraj Sharma) follows in Marshal's footsteps, also asking his girlfriend to be engaged.

This engagement is a great excuse for the big Easter Egg at the end of the episode, which is sure to make fans smile. Toward the end of the episode, Sid invites the group to his apartment, apparently for the first time. This is a big change from How I Met Your Mother, which started with the entire gang (minus Robin) already close by and hanging out daily. But the fun is in the place, which takes a sigh from those who hold a nostalgia for the original series as soon as the door is opened. It's simply the apartment where Ted and Marshall lived at the start of the original series, complete with the famous crossed swords hanging on the wall, which Sid says was left behind by the previous residents.

At various points during the show's run, different character configurations lived there, with Marshall and Lily eventually moving in and living there until the end of the series in 2016. At the end, the elder Ted (series narrator, voiced by the late Bob Saget) told his kids that someone outside the group now lives in the apartment… and now, it seems, we know who. According to Sid, he got the apartment for a bargain after finding it in a group of Wesleyan alumni. Ted, Marshall, Lily and several of their friends from the original series attended Wesleyan, which makes it quite likely that the "old couple" they got them from was Marshall and Lily.
