IT: The Thing | Prequel series in development by HBO Max

According to the Variety, a Pennywise prequel series is in development to air on HBO Max.

The series, now called Welcome to Derry, will begin in the 1960s, in the period leading up to the events of IT: The Thing, the 2017 film based on the horror novel by Stephen King. The plot also includes the origin story of Pennywise the Clown.

Andy Muschietti, who directed both films, will executive produce the series along with Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs. According to the site's sources, Muschiettis and Fuchs developed the story for the show with Fuchs writing the script. Andy would also direct the first episode if the project went to the series. writers room A is now open. Warner Bros. Television is the studio behind the project, with WB having produced both films.

Representatives of HBO Max and WBTV did not comment on the news.
