The 3D mustachioed plumber's racing game is sure to make any fan of the franchise excited, including the possibility of running with the Mii (custom avatar of current Nintendo consoles), especially if the intention is to play online, and not run the risk of having to compete with the same characters as your opponents. Online multiplayer works great for playing against friends, but if you want to challenge people all over the world, you're going to have to practice A LOT, so as not to be humiliated and never see the opponent during the course, and almost be overtaken as a latecomer in a race with only one competitor.

Personal dramas aside, the game works in a more balanced way than the Wii version (without those horrible motorcycles), in which the forced difficulty of being hit infinite times by a blue hull for every moment you are in 1st place is almost palpable. , for example. The new levels are very well designed, and the difficulty found the right balance to be challenging, without being forced. Consequently, inhibiting the absurd turns in a distance of two meters from the finish line, right at the end of the last lap. However, they could have selected better tracks for the retro cups. With a few exceptions, such as Dino Jungle (Gamecube) and Rainbow Road (Super Nintendo), the impression is that Nintendo chose the dullest stages of the other Mario Kart's.

Coins (Mario Kart Super Nes) are back. However, this time a use was put to them. As you collect them during the game, you end up releasing new options for coatings, wheels and gliders to assemble the Kart with the status and characteristics you like.

The big news (even illustrated on the game's cover) are the new ways to run, such as if the kart falls into the water, you can continue driving, just as in the air after using a blue ramp, gain speed by gliding with a glider. Karts, wheels and gliders are selectable, and influence differently the balance of the chosen final vehicle. This customization is fair, although it does lose a little of the individuality of the characters, which become just figures, but this is a neutral aspect of the game, as it is possible to assemble a Kart that matches the racer.

The characters could go back to having a special item like in Mario Kart Double Dash, and the Miis would have an exclusive one for them, this mechanic was applied in Mario Sports Mix (Wii), but apparently the racing franchise didn't give the same luck. This would further individualize the characters, making them stop being just figures. But, apparently Big N preferred to keep the game as balanced as possible and that limited these questions.

It also lacks a customization of controls, I particularly think that the game controls are very imposing, so you can only control the direction with the 3DS analog and you can only accelerate with the “A” button, without the possibility of customizing the controller to better take advantage of the general gameplay.

The 3D effect is well applied and conveys the sense of depth well (even too much), but for desperate players, like me, it is difficult to get used to it and not move the console in moments of total adrenaline or nervousness, blurring the 3D and disturbing the vision in important races. Tracks with very dynamic movement like Rainbow Road make it very difficult, and exciting, to play with the effect on.

The title is indispensable for anyone who has 3DS and enjoys the series, as it guarantees fun and challenge in all available game modes, the collection of coins has extended the game's single-player lifespan and makes the experience more rewarding.
