To All the Boys I've Loved Before is part of a trilogy written by the author Jenny Han. The first book was published in 2014 in the USA by the publisher Simon & Schuster and in Brazil, arrived in 2015 by the publisher Intrinsic.

These are “young adults” books that use high school as a backdrop and cover topics such as friendship, first loves, infinite first times, family issues, insecurities that we need to overcome in this phase and the main one, maturation. For those who read the books, he realized that the characters had a very pertinent development in each book and especially the protagonist, Lara Jean, who presented herself as a sweet and innocent girl and then we see her with more confidence and maturity. With an original adaptation in Netflix, the feature is well produced, but it left out relevant facts that make all the difference for us to understand the story.

See 11 of the differences in the list below.

11Kitty, there's nothing cute!

Kitty, Margot and Lara Jean chatting in the bedroom / Netflix

No good intentions, Kitty and LJ fight for a stupid reason at the beginning of the book and angrily Kitty sends her sister's letters. In the movie, she sends it because she doesn't want to see her sister alone and wants her to have a relationship with someone. Unlike the feature film, where it is evident that she sent it from the beginning, in the book we do not know and we only have confirmation that it was her in the end.

10Josh questions LJ and she throws herself at Peter

The first love we never forget and Lara Jean's first love was Josh Sanderson, interestingly, he was the boyfriend of his sister, Margot, who broke up with him, because due to his mother's advice it was unwise to go to college dating .

Josh was always LJ's best friend and was surprised when he received the letter. Unlike the movie, Josh confronts Lara Jean in the corridor and not on a race track and when questioned, LJ says he is relating to someone else so he doesn't have to explain himself to Josh. Until Peter comes along halfway and she jumps on him, kissing him. Peter is not at all uncomfortable with LJ's act. Also because he also received a letter written by her. For a few seconds he responds and then immediately says that his relationship with Gen was over and that he was not ready for another relationship, but then the desire to make Gen jealous and to sustain a fake courtship makes Peter and LJ support that. .

And this couple that starts their story in a comical way, has yielded one of the cutest and most beloved couples in books and screens.

9The most beautiful time of the year was not portrayed and the fight between Margot and LJ went much deeper

Christmas was portrayed in a superficial way and because it is a very important date, different from what was shown on the small screens, the Covey family has the habit of setting up the Christmas tree and making their grandmother's cookies and at that moment so familiar to Lara Jean, Josh participates.

During a passage, one of the glass ornaments falls to the floor and breaks, which promotes a conversation between Josh and LJ, who end up kissing. Although the film treats their relationship as a thing of the past, it does make Margot reluctant to forgive her sister. It is worth mentioning that this confusion does not happen on Lara's balcony, but during the Christmas recital that Margot proposed that the family should do, because they used to do it when her mother was alive and then stopped doing it.

8LJ doesn't think of Gen the way Netflix does, Peter's frequent delays and the situation of Josh's parents

Lara Jean does not think of Genevieve the way Netflix thinks ... Even though Gen is the most cynical and evil person in the plot, Lara Jean still has a certain respect for her and even she doesn’t understand what happened to make their relationship a disaffection. endless by Gen.

The fact is, in the book Lara Jean scolds Peter for saying something incorrect about Gen, because she still likes her. In the pages, our heartthrob makes a bad mistake when he is late and often. Yes, he is always late and that makes LJ dislike that. In some moments, she ends up hitchhiking with Josh and then she starts driving.

Something that the film does not drive is the fact that LJ starts to drive more, to get better at directing. Another important fact that the feature produced by Netflix does not mention is that Josh's parents keep falling out and that because of that, Josh is always at the Coveys' house.

7The Song girls' father is much more active in the book and Lara Jean is not as creative in the film as she should be

In the film, Lara Jean's father is not present as in the book and he doesn't even give condoms to Lara. He only gets to talk about sex with LJ in the second book. He is a father who cooks, tries to be present and talks to them.

Margot is boring on screens and in books she looks much more human. Kitty, on the other hand, is 9 years old in the book and in the movie 11. And unlike what everyone imagines, she is a child who behind the antics is someone who misses a maternal figure and who wants to have a complete family.

Lara Jean is a hands-on cook who is passionate about cookies, cakes and scrapbooks. She makes a lot of sweets and because she is very creative, she makes a scrapbook that she gives as a gift to Margot. Recalling that later, in the second book, she starts teaching scrapbook classes to the elderly in an asylum that works as a volunteer.

6Halloween was left out with John Ambrose

One scene that should be in the movie is the Halloween party, in which the reader discovers that LJ is a super fan of Harry Potter, where he wears a Cho Chang costume and on occasion, Josh ends up dressing up as Harry Potter and pairing with LJ. Kavinsky was Spiderman and died of jealousy when he saw their costume. And they kind of fall out.

Josh and Peter were not the only ones to receive a letter from LJ. Lucas and John Ambrose also received. Lucas becomes someone very present to LJ and a friendly shoulder on many occasions. John, on the other hand, was one of the boys that Lara Jean loved and who tries to meet him again during a presentation of the United Nations Project since he participated since elementary school, but she leaves quickly when she finds him and says nothing.

5Owen is more active and an important reason for Peter who was not for the feature film

Peter's younger brother Owen is more active in the book. Like Kitty, he is direct and sometimes mean. In one of the passages he says that LJ seems to wear more makeup than Gen.

A very important detail is that Peter prepares a snack for the school trip, and they are not Korean vitamins but DONUTS. He crosses the city to pick up donuts for them to snack together, and this is one of the reasons that Peter is late for a very special scene that was not for the film: Peter needs to get some items for his mother and LJ's antique store goes with him, and before picking her up he makes a surprise taking donuts to LJ.

4Harry Styles, loose hair and wills of Jenny Han

The alternate ending made by Netflix / Netflix

Lara Jean is a super fan of Harry Styles! If you pay attention, she has a pillow with a picture of the singer. Another cute detail that goes unnoticed is that Peter says that LJ looks beautiful with loose hair and in several scenes we can see Lara Jean with loose hair.

Jenny Han was not just restrained in writing the books and made a small appearance in the film as an LJ teacher, in addition to making a point of wanting an Asian actress for the role. According to the writer, a producer told her “as long as the actress captures the character's spirit, age and race don't matter '. To which she replied: "well, her spirit is Asian American".

Another peculiarity that Jenny did not give up was the electric rice cooker, according to her every Korean family has one.

3Heart necklace and the cutest photo ever!

The heart necklace that Lara Jean wears, she has had it since she was little and you can see flashbacks that she has always used it.

Another super cute detail is the background of Lara Jean's cell phone. It is a photo in which she and Kavinsky are lying down and this photo was taken during a moment of relaxation behind the scenes of the film. If you pay close attention, this photo was taken the day they fought over LJ talking in the halls with Josh and then LJ confronts Peter that he and Gen were meeting.

2Noah's unusual suggestion and improvisations

For All the Boys I Loved / Netflix

The two most impressive and striking moments are: the hand in the back pocket and the turning of LJ. The first was suggested by Peter and not by LJ in the original work. And it’s a reference to one of the cutest movies from John Hughes, Kittens and Cats.

The second, who never wanted to be turned that way? Do you know that scene where Peter and LJ arrive at the school cafeteria and he turns it around with his hand in her pants pocket? It was a improvisation by Noah that worked very well. He knows how to be romantic. And John Ambrose hasn't changed a thing. It is that boy who appears at the end of the film, in a post-credit scene that shows how handsome and grown up he was. Another important thing is the costume. The clothes of the little John and the big John are identical.

1The surprise ending

For All the Boys I Loved / Netflix

To All the Boys I've Loved Before it is a production based on the book that bears the same name, and makes use of this adolescent theme. They don't end up together in the first book - it must have been a solution for Netflix, if there wasn't a sequel. But the film yields a sweet, fun plot and holds us in an intense way.

A quality of Susan Johnson's work is that she approaches the themes of age in a very comical way (it is not a silly comedy), but it does not bring that whole drama with it. It is a film that steals our attention and gradually captivates us like the book. The highlight is on account of Lana Condor, a young woman who lives in the skin in a spectacular way our dear Lara Jean. A cheerful, charismatic character, who has her inner dramas and that with the unfolding of the plot, she develops and matures and that director Susan works very well. It is the search for self-knowledge.

A glaring fact of great importance is that Peter and LJ do not end up together in the first book, at that moment we realized that Netflix production has moved forward (perhaps, because it thinks it would not have a sequel). But even so it is a production that pleases us and leaves us with a taste of wanting more.
