First Impressions: The Night Shift

The Night Shift

The Night Shift is the new medical series of the channel NBC. Ironically, The Night Shift is by far the channel's best debut, I say ironically because of the fact that it's not the type of theme that the network usually bets on, since after ER decided not to mess with a winning team and resorted to an (unnecessary) avalanche of police series.

I confess that I was counting the days to watch this series (it took me a while to make the first impressions, but I watched it as soon as it came out…), I love medical series and The Night Shift still comes with the bonus of having the Eoin Macken (miss you Merlin), who had already conquered me in Merlin and now conquered even more with his cynical and mocking way in this pilot.

I really liked the proposal to be the night shift at the hospital, where real emergencies happen. No rare diseases, doctors in a coma and stuff like that, there's the pure blood and rush that we all want to see! Another fact that pleased me and that came out of what we are used to seeing was the discussion “ethics vs money”. During most of the pilot, the doctors are in conflict with the hospital manager (Freddy Rodríguez) for not accepting emergency treatments because the patient does not have health insurance, even though this seemed a little forced with all the “Obamacare” tit that is happening in the USA, I found the controversy “saving life vs winning” interesting money".

 Night Shift

It's another series that doesn't have a protagonist, so to speak. The team is all there, with its conflicts and problems. In this pilot, the biggest highlight was  TC Callahan (Macken), who at the beginning showed his strong personality and his incredible medical skills, during the episode he was the one who got the most fights but proved to be the most dedicated to saving lives. Clearly he is the famous anti-hero, one of the best built, he was expelled from being a medical position in the war and is now quarrelsome, authoritarian and, to close with a flourish, he owes to the mafia.

The rest of the characters are slightly introduced in this pilot, we know the personality and a little of each one's life but we will still go deeper into them.

I dare say that The Night Shift It was without a doubt the best debut of the mid-season. Let's hope it doesn't fall into the NBC cancellation rut and lasts for a few more seasons.
