Resenha | A Seleção – Kiera Cass 1
Book cover, A Seleção (2012)

Youth literature, which tells the story of America Singer, a young woman who wants to take control of her own life. However, she sees herself in a choice that will decide her future: The Selection. America wouldn't change anything in her life other than wanting to have a little more money and be able to reveal her secret dating relationship. At her mother's insistence, America ends up signing up for the Seleção, confident that she would go unnoticed. However, she becomes one of the selected ones and her life begins to take different paths to which she dreamed.

The Selection is a competition that comprises thirty-five beautiful young women from different castes in which the prince will choose his future wife, the Princess of Illéa. Relatively new country, with new rules and customs. Their society lives on behalf of the kingdom and all this began after the independence of China that had conquered the United States. Thus, new laws were created and among them, the one that most generates effects in society is the competition or the selection process of a new princess, with the premise that the people think they are closer to royalty.

I'm here. And I'm not fighting. My plan is to enjoy the food until you kick me.

Within this process, the thirty-five selected will undergo evaluations that take place in the presence of the entire court and are televised daily. While they are participating, they are paid, protected and acquired a little fame. The most interesting and peculiar within this plot is that the society of Illéa consists of eight castes and it is difficult for a girl of poor caste to participate or advance within the stages.

Right away, we know that America is a five and that it belongs to the cast of manual artists. In general, the caste to which it belongs is devoid of much richness and is quite simple. She accepts to participate in the Selection at the request of her mother who sees an opportunity to change her life. At first we see that she does not want to participate in any way nor does she make an effort to do so. She promises Aspen, her boyfriend, who has been with her for two years that she will not be chosen.

However, as the plot develops, America becomes fond of Prince Maxon who is very interesting at first. But this fairy tale is more complicated than we can imagine. Many social and political issues present in the real world present themselves in the universe of America. Often, driven by emotion, the young woman acts on impulse and finds herself on the brink of disqualification for every ill-considered decision.

– You called them all “my dear”? I asked, turning my face to the rest of the room.
– Yeah, and they all seem to like it.
– That's exactly why I didn't like it.

America and Maxon dialoguing

The plot is well written and with each paragraph you feel obligated to keep going until you know. In the end, you're so curious and uncomfortable with so many issues raised that you have to read the rest of the sequel to discover the future and ending of our sweet America Singer.

But why should I read?
