The human race tries to expand its territories, but is faced with a problem: the habitable planets are few and the competition for them is enormous.

After years without expanding its borders, the Colonial Union makes the controversial decision to start a new colony, and the task of managing it is left to two decorated war heroes: John Perry and Jane Sagan. Initially, the biggest challenge is to reconcile the interests of groups with different origins.

However, soon the heroes find themselves isolated on a planet that is not what it seems and discover that they are just pieces on the board of a dispute that involves the fate of all humanity.

In the New York Times bestseller War of the Old, the award-winning author John Scalzi brings to the reader an epic story of galactic conquest and interplanetary exploration, with captivating characters, well-constructed political intrigues and without ever losing their good humor.

Well, many detest continuations, mainly because the books are lost in plot. The surprises cease to exist and the characters are no longer so captivating.

Only this is different with the War of the Old books. Its continuation The Ghost Brigades manages to be superior and present us with a new dynamic by expanding the universe of the FCD.

And now, John Scalzi goes further and this book alone is superior to the first two.

The Last Colony is not just a fictional book, but a real lesson on human beings. It could very well be an adventure of the first colonizers who aspired to arrive in the new lands and even with everything ready, they still made mistakes.

Only in space, there are no “spaces” for errors. And Scalzi draws a critical and social parallel to how dependent we are on technology and how simple tasks have become almost impossible to do.

In addition, Perry and Sagan's relationship is stronger. The first returns to being a more normal human as he was on Earth and Sagan is learning to adapt to not sharing his thoughts with other people and being a simple human. And still raise the daughter of one of humanity's greatest traitors or hero of the Obins.

And this is a point placed in check in this work, about points of view that are not wrong or right in their entirety. For the necessity and urgency of survival makes them have to make decisions that are sure to have consequences.

It is interesting to realize that in discussions involving the simplest equipment management to people, humanity will always want to discuss and have their opinion as the correct one.

The Last Colony exploits this very well with its many interconnected stories within a Colony. This narrative follows discussions about racism, technological dependence, religion, philosophy, and something that many do not notice between the lines, but which is fascinating: understanding their feelings.

This learning about feelings happens with the Obins, which in this book are shown little by little through two interesting characters, who are learning to deal with emotions, through the vision of a teenager. They go to extremes and the only alternative is often to turn off a button. A dream of several people with a disorder that can be depression among others.

The Last Colony is one of the best fiction books of today without a doubt. Because its author manages to transcribe the current scenario of our planet in a critical sphere, sometimes even heavy, sometimes in a fun way, but always keeping the reader as the main thinker of this story.

The book is already in bookstores and released by the publisher Aleph.
