Douglas Adams is a great name in literature. Famous for mixing humor and science fiction, he became known for the acclaimed series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Dirk Holistic Investigations Agency Gently has the same wonderful narrative that Adams employed in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.  His comic and fluid tone is the big key to the success of his works.

14 years after his death, the Publisher Arqueiro publishes in Brazil the first of two books that Adams left written about the detective Dirk Gently.  Gently is an eccentric and arrogant but very charismatic detective who tries to solve the mystery of a murder to save the skin of Richard MacDuff, who became suspicious because the dead man was his boss.

Adams repeats the success formula used in Hitchhikers of the Galaxy, using unconventional, almost absurd events to add the right touch of humor to the book. For example, Gently begins to bond with MacDuff when he sees MacDuff coming through his girlfriend's apartment window to steal the answering machine tape. We also have some facts that seem isolated and inexplicable, like a couch wedged in the entrance to Richard's apartment that drives everyone crazy. You can see a resemblance to the old saga, can't you?

The premise of Dirk Gently Holistic Research Agency it's good, the characters are very well built, but the plot development is kind of weak. As good, and fun, as the narrative is, the lack of focus gets in the way of reading a little. The large amount of isolated facts (another characteristic of Adams) can cause the reader's confusion, it is not difficult to get lost in the mix of events, or to wander in the reading. The best part comes even when you just focus on the investigation.

Dirk Gently Holistic Research Agency it's fun and nonsense like most of the author's works and has an almost impossible not to love protagonist. It may fail a little in plot development, but it's still a book worth checking out.

  1. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series is fantastic, if the narrative is the same wonderful in Dirk Gently's Bureau of Holistic Investigations, this must be a very well written book. The plot development aside, which you say is a bit flawed, I'll read the book, of course.

  2. oh, I'm curious to read it, as I've only read the author's backpacker guide… even if he loses focus at times, I believe this won't make me discouraged with reading…
his cover is so beautiful *—*

  3. I didn't read it, whoever read it on the blog was my boyfriend and he liked it.
I haven't read anything by the author yet, but I still intend to.
I think the premise is pretty cool.

  4. Hi Taranis!

I loved the cover when I saw it, but I confess it's not my kind of book and I was a little surprised when you said the plot is a little weak. I only see reviews praising the book. I'm so happy when I see a candid review, congratulations!!
