Based on the eponymous bestseller by Jojo Moyers, How I Was Before You won fans even before its debut, among readers and non-readers of the original work. With its romantic content, a very deep subject and a cast team with many familiar faces, the film became highly anticipated in its first trailer.

How I Was Before You (Me Before You) was sold to the public as a novel, but it goes far beyond that, the work is not about passion between a man and a woman, but love, in every way that it applies. Love of the protagonist for helping her family, love of her family for supporting her, love of parents who do everything for their son and employees who agree with anything to help their boss to have a better life. And that’s what makes this movie so good!

In the long we met Louisa Clarke (Emilia Clarke, in game of Thrones), a young woman who helps her family a lot, mainly financially. After losing his job, Lou finds herself desperate, to the point of accepting any opportunity, so she ends up going to work as a caregiver. Will Traynor (Sam Claflin, in Hunger Games), a former businessman who suffered a serious accident two years ago and is now a quadriplegic. Will was very active and adventurous, so he hates his situation completely dependent and it made him bitter, moody and sarcastic.

It is not easy for Louisa to work with Will, but over time their relationship improves and they become more united. And it is at this time that Lou discovers something terrible: Will intends to end his suffering by euthanizing. Determined, the young woman decides to do everything in her power to prove to her friend that there are still reasons to live.

Como eu era antes de voce

As the script was written by Jojo herself, there was not much change, of course cuts and adaptations are always made, but the rhythm follows the same pattern as the book. The comic tone, a great differentiator of Jojo's work, was maintained, giving certain relief at strategic moments in the feature. The drama is also present, albeit softened, alternating between relaxed and sad moments, making the work even more enjoyable to watch.

The cast is the highlight of How I Was Before You. Emilia and Sam have an impressive chemistry, forming a couple of protagonists that match perfectly. The two show all their talent for acting, especially Sam, who got a very complicated role and convinced with his paralysis. The rest of the team is not left behind, even with smaller stakes, Jenna Colleman (Doctor Who) and Matthew Lewis (Harry Potter) please fans with their characters.

Thea Sharrock, who debuts as a director, showed that she has a knack for it, using scenes and precise cuts at exactly the right moments. Its direction works in perfect harmony with the beautiful photography of the small English town and the wonderful soundtrack.

With all the elements in harmony, How I Was Before You is the type of film that appeals to everyone, especially those who have read the original work, who will love how faithful the adaptation has become. Even those not close to the theme can enjoy this romance where love is portrayed in so many different ways.

How I Was Before You opens on June 16 in Brazilian cinemas, but the most anxious can check it out on special valentine's day preview, June 9-12.
