Gayle Forman is one of those authors that you read the first work and automatically want to read all the others. Always dealing with a serious subject, but with an impressive subtlety, Forman knows how to put psychological factors to dictate his books.

What's Strange About Me is the first fiction of Gayle Forman. Spent inside the institution Red Rock, we know girls who theoretically have serious behavioral problems and are there to be treated. Why theoretically? Because most of the inmates there have no problem, they are sent by parents who do not know how to deal with them or think they have a problem that they do not have. To give an example, one of them is a lesbian and is there for a “gay cure”

"So from the very first days at Red Rock, I think I was able to understand how animals in a zoo feel."

Brit, our narrator, is the one who least deserves to be there. Sent by her father, for allegedly suffering from TDO (Oppositional Defiant Disorder), from the beginning she shows to be an ordinary teenager. Even though she has some tattoos and colored hair, she is not at all rebellious. He also doesn't drink or use drugs, his passion is his band, he just wants to form his music career.

As we progress in reading, we find that Red Rock is a horrible clinic, and very misleading. Parents do not know, but they use heavy techniques, which include cursing encouraged by the organizers, in addition to having a poor accommodation condition, very poorly balanced food and forcing afternoons under a strong sun building walls.

When Brit meets Bebe, Matha, Cassie and the veteran V., your situation improves a little, your stay becomes more bearable. The five friends decide to get together to end this terrible situation they are living in.

“Welcome - to our Divinamente, Fabulous and Extraexclusive Clube de Malucas”

Even though it's a fiction, What's Strange About Me is based on a story that Forman had to write about boarding schools. She was so shocked by what she discovered that she decided to write this book. So, as usual, there is a lot of real stuff in this plot, always pulling a lot towards the psychological.

As If I stay or I was here, this work is engaging and profound, where we only stop reading when we get to know why the girls are there and how they intend to leave. The only thing that differs What's Strange About Me from the old books of the writer is the most adventurous tone, you can even have a little suspense at times.

Who is a fan of Gayle Forman he already knows how his narrative captures the reader and his stories always provoke a moment of reflection, in addition to being very instructive.

Even though I loved this book, I have to confess that it is not my favorite of hers. Still, I can guarantee you will not regret reading it.

  2. I read If I stay and I liked it a lot. I was also interested in the other books by the author, including the one that caught my attention right away by the cover! I love these books that address different themes (at least this is different for me, lol), I intend to read this book soon ☺

  3. Hi Hi!

I like Gayle Forman, but after reading the synopsis, I didn't think I was going to like this book. And I keep thinking like that.
It's nice to show what can happen in some boarding schools, but it's not for me.

    Kisses!

Until today, none of the other books interested me and I didn't even watch the movie, but this book has a different theme, I've seen similar movies, I just haven't read anything like this before.

  5. I agree and disagree with some of the things you said.
Yes, her writing brings us reflections, but no, at least for me, it is not that writing that makes me want to read all her books.
I asked for this book because I wanted to give the author a chance. I hope I am not disappointed again.
    Bjs, bjs.

  6. I didn't read anything by the author and so I look and see the reviews, I don't have the slightest desire to read, but you made me curious in this paragraph: Gayle Forman is one of those authors that you read the first work and automatically want to read all the others. Always dealing with a serious subject, but with an impressive subtlety, Forman knows how to put psychological factors to dictate his books.

  7. Hello all well?
I didn't know this book by Gayle, I found it very interesting, because as you said it is different from what we are used to seeing her.

  8. I agree with you, I've read a book by the author and I've been wanting to read even the little notes she writes hahaha

Her writing is so engaging that even when the book ends we remain stuck in the story 😀

  9. hello 😀
I still haven't read anything by the author. Not that her books don't catch my eye, but I'm always a little afraid of the intensity they seem to go through, I'm a very sensitive person, who cries and spends days thinking about a book. So, I always choose what to read well, so as not to get a literary hangover later. This book seems to be incredible and I was really curious, but let's see… Bjs

  10. Hello! Do you think you knew nothing about this book? Being a psychologist, I became very interested in the plot and the way the author developed the story in the context of boarding schools. It is sad to think that the reality for which we have struggled so much in psychiatric reform still exists in so many places. I hope to read the work soon.

    Kisses!
