Review | Far Cry 6

Far Cry 6 is a more than exciting game, where its characters are so captivating, that we believe they exist and that we are part of this revolution.

Far Cry 6 is a first person shooter developed by Ubisoft Toronto and published by Ubisoft. It is the sixth main title in the series. Far cry and was released on October 7, 2021 for Amazon Luna, Google Stadia, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. Presentations, made, let's review!

Plot

Review | Far Cry 6 1

As always in the Far Cry franchise, the plot is the main part of the game. It doesn't just serve as another story to tell that is forgotten by players as they venture out shooting and trying to survive. The story is an integral part of the game and if you don't pay attention, you'll get lost with what's going on.

The game takes place on a fictional Caribbean island called “Yara”, inspired by Cuba, ruled by a dictatorship of “El Presidente” Anton Castillo (voiced and performed by Giancarlo Esposito), who is raising her son Diego (voiced by Anthony Gonzalez), to follow his government. The player takes on the role of a guerrilla trying to reclaim the island for his people.

It's like watching a movie and paying attention only to the adventure scenes and missing the conversations that lead to the end. Furthermore, Far Cry 6 is part of the history until recent that shaped our current political world.

political and social approach

Review | Far Cry 6 2

We are in the 21st century, even if some people still think they live in a 15th century society. Discussing gender, machismo, freedom of expression and politics are subjects that are more than mandatory in entertainment and especially in games.

Today, having male-only characters in games no longer makes sense. For decades women have always played but never had a real representation in a title. Some might even say there were female characters, but let's face it, an armored warrior dressed from head to toe while the warrior walks around in thong armor, it's not something they like.

Would you walk like that? Furthermore, talking about the social problems existing in our nations is of paramount importance, especially for people to stop outsourcing their problems. The fault of a country's economic problem is not a disease. It exists and has always existed. Just go back to the news two to three years ago and you'll see.

And if you go back decades again those problems will be there. And if it goes back much further, like 100 years? Also. The most interesting and curious thing is that humanity has always outsourced its problems to others: Jews, blacks, Protestants, immigrants, Spanish flu, COVID...

So Far Cry 6 does its job very well in bringing these issues to the center of the stage through the brilliant and ever-impressive presence of Giancarlo Esposito. And to give more cloth to these – which should not be controversial – the right to vote and LGBTQ+ rights.

Characters

Review | Far Cry 6 3

Giancarlo Esposito shows all his talent as Anton Castillo. His voice acting and voice acting for the game are without a doubt outstanding. The actor is best known for his character Gustavo “Gus” Fring in the series Breaking Bad and BEtter Call Saul, a role that earned him an Emmy Awards nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (2012).

He is also known for his roles in movies like Do the Right Thing, The Usual Suspects and King of New York. interpret too Sydney Glass (Magic Mirror) in era uma vezseries ABC. Still on TV was the Major Tom Neville on the Serie Revolution on NBC and can most recently be seen on Disney's The Mandalorian series. In 2014 he won a star in the Hall of Fame.

With all this resume and talent, Esposito may only appear in dialogue scenes, but his presence is so strong, it looks like he'll be hiding behind any wall or room. Also, he is no longer a villain like the others who were in Far Cry. Here he represents a period of history that many seem to have forgotten or prefer to say they were good and he is there to remind you that freedom is not just a word.

The other characters are also very good, as well as Dani Rojas, protagonist of Far Cry 6. Dani can be either male or female depending on the player's choice, but cannot be customized or renamed.

Just like it happened in Assassin's Creed Valhalla, when players could choose whether Eivor it would be male or female. And in case you haven't noticed, they're both from Ubisoft.

Gameplay

Review | Far Cry 6 4

Basically, Far Cry 6 is the same as the previous games and there's no way out of it. As with any franchise, the mechanics and gameplay remain the same. To have something innovative 100%, just with a title other than Far Cry.

Therefore, criticizing that he is the same is just complaining to get attention. To have a Far Cry that is not to invade bases, kill people, hide, get items, destroy, flee, find, among others, only if Ubisoft creates a Far Cry Kart.

The gameplay continues in the same style, with some corrections and mainly a more than significant improvement in its design. Far Cry 6 is beautiful! There is no other word to say. Textures, characters, shading, shine, everything is in perfect sync.

For fans of this style of game and Far Cry, they will continue to feel at home, as the sixth title in the franchise brings new tools with different missions to complete. But, as always happens for games like Far Cry, Metal Gear, among others of the genre, it ends up being more of the same.

Worth it?

Review | Far Cry 6 5

Yes! Even if you've never played Far Cry in your life, you can sit back and enjoy the most of the Far Cry 6 story. The game is fun in the sense that it will entertain you with its story, making you feel an integral part of this revolution. For those who enjoy history and Cold War subjects, it's a dish that overflows.

Mainly for addressing issues that have always been present in society such as their rights to freedom of expression, but which were – and still are – repressed for not being part of the “context” and “way of life” of its leaders.

The gameplay ends up being secondary in this title, but it's still deep with its captivating characters that we want at all costs to reach the end and achieve freedom. This is a title that ending the game is the wrong way to say it, because Dani Rojas and his friends are so important to us that we faithfully believe that they exist and that we are part of the revolution.
