Review | Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Extraction

Rainbow Six Extraction is bold, fun and will keep you entertained from start to finish. And if you've never played a title in the series, no problem. This is a great opportunity.

There are some parallel stories within the games that really deserve a title of their own, as with some movies and series. How many times do we see an interesting event that ends up having a special episode, a spin-off, or even a new movie franchise? Well, that more or less happened with Raibow Six.

Rainbow Six Extraction was inspired by the story of a Siege Operator, who was taken to a parallel dimension, and had to face a mutated version of another Operator. This formidable moment of the game is the basis of this new adventure, which can be said: what an adventure!

The story

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Extraction is a cooperative tactical first-person shooter for one to three players. Players must assemble their teams of elite Rainbow Six operators to launch incursions into tense, chaotic and unpredictable containment zones and uncover the mysteries behind a lethal and ever-evolving Archæan alien threat. Knowledge, cooperation and a tactical approach are the player's best weapons. You have to take risks to face deadly enemies and contain the parasite.

The game

Armed with a thought-provoking story that stirs fiction and horror – who doesn't like that? – the game is a real avalanche with a CGI presentation that would also make an excellent movie. Well, we're talking about something based on Tom Clancy, simply the greatest literary author on the subject of espionage. And in case you don't know who he is, Clancy was an American writer and historian known for his in-depth plots of espionage and military science that take place during and after the Cold War.

He was the creator of characters and books that became movies – and games – like Jack Ryan which won its own series in Prime Video, long as The Hunt for Red October, The Sum of All Fears, Rainbow Six (yes, it's a 1998 book), Splinter Cell (another book from 2004), among others. So, if you really want to immerse yourself in the games, read the books because it will be a wonderful immersion. Sadly Tom Clancy left us on October 1, 2013.

Returning to the game, players should already start exploring the menu and discover clues, documents and information to help you solve the title's puzzles. For those who like spying, it's a full plate, because in addition to all the mystery to be solved, you can still shoot enemies. Much better than just jumping into a story falling out of nowhere and shooting all over the place without knowing why.

Gameplay

Same as the entire franchise. The difference, since it is necessary to have some, is in cooperation and stealth. We're talking about a Tom Clancy game! So there has to be cooperation between the players. If in books and movies this is represented by the people who work with the main characters, in games it is up to their gamemates. In addition, stealth is essential to keep the mood of reality, as we have a Real and Immediate Danger, making a pun on one of his books/films played by Harrison Ford.

Here, staying hidden to carry out your tasks is very important. One of Siege's improved mechanics. This combination, which should be the basis of all games with the name Tom Clancy, is what makes Extraction one of the best games in my opinion of the franchise.

This new kind of threat coming from outside, that is, from our planet, may even keep Tom Clancy fans awake, but it turned out really good. Taking a break in enemy style was a good sign and welcome to the game as we are facing the unknown. If at some point in the entire history of spy shooters we faced Russians, Chinese, i.e. “communists” and then the enemy within, the US government itself, having something different in the form of an alien race gives more content and suspense, because we never know what they really want, even if it's world domination.

Another interesting aspect is that even if you are not the type to stay hidden and want to go out shooting, well, the game will also be your style, as it becomes much more challenging. Entering the four hit zones, namely New York City, San Francisco, Alaska and… no spoilers, it's really fascinating. There are 12 primary levels to play with your friends, where the basics work: face enemies, destroy them and rescue someone.

The good thing about it all is that the game is so immersive that even when you return to one of these screens, you can't feel like you're repeating the game. Congratulations to the developers for that.

Worth it?

With all the information given above, there is no need to say yes. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Extraction is a challenging game, even if it has little story. You will realize this. The game is bold, fun and will keep you entertained from start to finish. And if you've never played a title in the series, no problem. This is a great opportunity.
