The director jaci (Paulo Gorgulho) and teachers Lucia (Debora Bloch), Marco André (Silvio Guindane), Sonia (Hermila Guedes) and Eliete (Thalita Carauta) are back for the start of another school year in the night course for young people and adults at Escola Estadual Carolina Maria de Jesus. However, the few enrollments are not enough to keep the gates open and it takes a miracle for students not to return home without the long-awaited diploma.

On the 10th of September, the Globoplay The second season of the original series premieres Second call. In this sequence, the conflicts that permeate the characters' lives become even more complex. Students, faculty and staff will learn to develop their own ways of exercising tolerance so that everyone can live in harmony, respecting their great differences.

Each one with their past, new students are not defined only by what they show to the world, but by the feelings and desires hidden by a life of difficulties, 'no's' from others and limiting beliefs. Abuse, racial intolerance, alcoholism and violence in all its forms are some of the obstacles that built the certainties of young people and adults enrolled in school. This season, the school is also preparing to welcome students who do not even have a place to live and who, therefore, live under the viaducts and bridges of São Paulo. around Second call also develops the personal stories of the high school teachers, suspended since the end of the first season.

The six episodes of the work, a partnership between Globo and O2 Movies, once again highlights the transforming power of Education and brings new and exciting stories of overcoming. The cast of the second season is still composed of Angelo Antonio, Flavio Bauraqui, Moacyr Franco, Rui Ricardo Dias, Jennifer Dias, Pedro Wagner, Rejane Faria, Tamirys O'Hanna, Gustavo Luz, Nena Inoue, Nataly Rocha, Sidney Santiago, among others.

Carla Faour and Júlia Spadaccini talk about the new season

The public's first contact with the work written by Carla Faourand Julia Spadacciniand with artistic direction by Joana Jabace was in 2019, with the stories of students and teachers who went through the scenario of Second call during the first season. For the authors, choosing the themes of the second season appears as a more than routine and automatic action. In this new phase, with the imminent threat of the extinction of the night course for young people and adults, Carla and Júlia decided to bring to the classrooms of the Carolina Maria de Jesus School not only the dramas of the students of the community where the narrative takes place, but also those who don't even have a place to live.

The creation of the nine characters with no fixed abode and the idea of enrolling them as students arose while the authors walked the streets of large cities, increasingly taken over by homeless men, women and children. Showing a little of the reality of homeless people is something delicate, especially considering all the prejudices that these individuals raise. But what about when we talk about the right to education for this most underserved layer of society? And what happens when they start to live with another group of people already enrolled, who are also needy and full of problems? These are the questions of the authors that gave rise to the plot.

“In this second season, we will not fail to address the needs related to public education, which remains the focus of the series. But with the arrival of new students at the school, who are so different from each other, we wanted to give voice to an even more, shall we say, invisible layer, which are the homeless”, explains Carla Faour. For Júlia Spadaccini, the novelty is an invitation to reflect: “If in the first season we dealt with the stories of people who have so little, now we will tell the difficulties of students who are even more needy. The invitation we make to the public is: if we combine the experiences of students already enrolled with the lives of those who don't even have a place to live, what happens? Conflicts can't help but arise, but everyone will need to find a way to live together, right?”.

The extensive research process, legacy of the first season, is still present. The pair of authors were concerned with deeply understanding the theme, in an attempt to break stereotypes and prejudices: “Living on the street is a transitory situation, no one actually chooses viaducts and bridges as a home. In the rush of everyday life, we are not in the habit of thinking about what led these individuals to choose this life. Living on avenues, abandoned buildings and on the roads has a cost and even schedules”, says Julia Spadaccini. From the beginning, the authors knew that generalization is a dangerous weapon: “It would be irresponsible to treat these people as a bloc. Our characters are human beings, they collect stories from a past full of significant moments. There are also many reasons that led them to live the life they lead. That's what we want to show, the stories”, completes Carla Faour.

The concern to go beyond the simple label of 'homeless' was also the artistic director, Joana Jabace. Back at the location that gives life to Escola Carolina Maria de Jesus, the director arrives with the mission of directing new actors and discovering, together with the cast, the best way to tell about the newly arrived students: “We have new themes, represented also by the students who do not live on the street, who are also emotional and have their own weight for the series. It's my responsibility to listen to what the cast has to say and convey the characters' hope and stories of overcoming. Education is responsible for rescuing people. It is an extremely relevant topic and it doesn't matter if the person lives on the street or not. It’s the same effect for everyone.”
