Films adapted from video game games often generate a lot of controversy, mostly for not being true to the original story.
Tomb Raider: The Origin is a production that comes to remedy this problem, being extremely faithful to the well-known game. The film comes with the proposal to be a kind of reboot of the franchise. For this, it adapts the new game, launched in 2013, presenting a Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander) younger and inexperienced, who will still discover the skills of his family.
After the disappearance of his father (Dominic west), Lara refuses to take over the companies and give her father away, needing to get by herself to survive. However, when she finally receives an item that inherits that indicates that there is more to be explored, the young woman sets out on her search.
The script invests a lot more in the character's intelligence, constantly reinforcing his talents to solve puzzles and get out of complicated situations, but not always being so successful when the use of force is necessary.
Alicia gives this side of the character well, presenting an interesting, more restrained version, without forgetting Lara's well-known malice. Her performance makes it clear that there is an interest in continuing the film franchise, investing in a gradual evolution of the protagonist.
The rest of the cast is not left out. Even with a huge focus on the protagonist, Tomb Raider: The Origin opens space for other talents, mainly the almost villain played by Walton Goggins, who very well delivers his role as a terrifying character.
To start this new phase, the production does not only invest in fidelity to the game's history, which has only basic and necessary changes to the script, it also invests in a visual that refers to the game's graphics. Between scenes that pay homage to the game, which give the viewer the impression of actually playing, and small elements full of references, Tomb Raider: The Origin it `s a big fan service.
There are some caveats in the plot, with information that remains on the air and moments that are embedded only to help with the aforementioned references. Still, the film is a promising start for the character's new phase in cinema. Leaving room for continuation, the feature shows that it is ambitious and that the company intends to try to please fans of the game also in the next productions.
