Launched by freevee, Cousin is a comedy created by Shea Serrano in a semi-autobiographical style, recounting his upbringing in San Antonio, Texa. An interesting work that shows a lot of Latin culture without losing the appropriate comedy tone, it is a fun production with great representative content.

With executive co-production by Mike Schur, which is behind projects such as The Office, Parks and Recreation and The Good Place, the plot continues Rafa (Ignacio Diaz-Silverio), a teenager balancing college aspirations, social expectations, and a busy home life anchored by his single mother Drea (Christina Vidal) and no less than five very troublesome uncles.

Very simply, Cousin comically shows the difficulty of a mother who has raised not only her teenage son, but also her siblings, since childhood. Between the quintet's clumsiness and help, the series represents a different and united family, which in its hectic way is totally functional.

The funny part is the uncles, who are completely different and always fight with each other, in an almost childish way. Ryan (Carlos Santos) works in a bank and is proud to be the only one with a diploma - in reality, certification, as he is constantly reminded. Mike (Henri Esteve) is a soldier and takes his passion for his profession into life, his way of dressing and acting every day. Rollie (Johnny Rey Diaz) is the baddest of the group, who always starts a fight and is constantly arrested. Jay (Jonathan Medina) works in construction and always seems suspicious of everything. Finally, Mondo (Efrain Villa) has a naturalistic and Zen view of life. Together they help - or hinder - Rafa's upbringing and constantly give confusing love advice so that he can win. Mya (Stakiah Lynn Washington), new girl at school who is his crush.

It becomes interesting to try to uncover throughout the season what is real and what is fictional in the events of the plot. Certainly the profiles of each character are based on Serrano's real relatives, and clearly all quotes from Latin culture. However, there are moments full of comical absurdities that raise doubts as to whether they really happened or are just narrative strategies.

Cousin It's a series that entertains on screen, while also doing its social service. In addition to praising the responsible female role through Drea, it is full of female Latina representation on and off screen. The production and script team has a Latina woman in an important role in every episode, including famous actresses in the direction.

The plot chooses to place common days in Rafa's life, indicated that are based on Serrano's experiences by containing the dates at the beginning of each episode. This makes it easy to identify with various events in teenage life, especially for those who have unconventional families.
